What did you do with your flock today?

Well this morning I did their water and food before even letting him out. I was awake before the sun started coming up so, I just wanted this morning to go as smoothly as possible. Less time in the coop is probably the best. I don’t know, maybe not. But yesterday afternoon I was in there and my cockerel behaved. Which I did kind of worry about since 2 new things started with him yesterday. I think I will just spend more time in the coop in the afternoon rather than mornings. Mornings has just been a little easier cause my kids aren’t up and trying to get in the coop, or running up on the coop.

Oh she's a sweetheart! You have a nice looking flock there!
So far he's not worse in his balance and the poopy butt clearing hopefully means a tad better. He IS eating and drinking still so if it is botulism, hopefully it's a very mild, recoverable dose. No one else shows any sign of sickness still so at least there's that.
Glad he's no worse! How's he doing today?

I went out this morning to let old Joey boy out of his bachelor pad...he immediately raised those hackles and got down in position to get me.
I ignored it cuz I had the baby cochins in my arms to bring down to be with everyone else.
There were a family of wild turkeys in my yard. Guess they were just "passing through" lol so I made sure they finally all got out of our wrought iron fence.
Then as I went to open run door to get babies settled, Joey rared up and got me good on the shin...blood and all.
I know I move slowly and I think when he is irritated, hormonal that hesitation I naturally have cause of my health is like putting a target on me for him.
It has happened with every rooster I have ever had that got to be his age or 7 months and older.
I had a conversation with myself as I walked back to house...I originally did not know I wasn't "allowed" to have roosters where we live. We've never lived in "city" before ever so a lot of new things for us here. But as God pointed out - now I know. I realize I have a problem and yet I continue in the same fashion...yet again and this is my 4th rooster I've tried with.since having chickens.
So am I gonna continue doing the same thing expecting a different result? BTW that is the definition of insanity. Or am i going to rehome him...them cuase there is now Bluey and Coco that are definite boys too.
idk
It saddens me...cuz much like @kurby22 daughter the boys steal my heart from hatch!!! I naturally bond with them...always trying NOT to!
Do I let em have some babies then rehome em?
Idk
Very frustrating...hope it gets better for you too @FBMcrazy8

Not at all hahaha. There’s 6 in the big coop and run which are my original 6. Then I have 17, 8 week olds in a smaller coop right next to it, waiting to get to size to introduce fully to the big ones. They have olive eggers at my tractor supply right now too, so tempting! 🤣 this is my original 6 on their evening forage tonight.
You have some lovely hats and scarves...er.... chickens... there! Those look like fun girls!
I gave my girls a pumpkin
Happy chickens!

Wild turkeys sound delightful ❤️
I'm so sorry you've had such bad luck with the roos ☹️
There's no shame in rehoming them...just make sure your up front about the behavior. I bought a beautiful Sumatra pair once and the fellow selling him tells me he was so glad such a wonderful rooster was going to a good home. Less then 24 hours later that rooster got me in the wrist and it felt like he broke it....lol.
Babies first wouldn't be bad 🙃

So yesterday I put some hog panels around the pond to keep everything out of it til I could read some. Hubby's home and it's family time so reading isn't so easy!

But I did read enough that I doubt it's my pond. Most important is that nothing else is sick still. Second is that kind of thing is usually from stagnant water and my pond has circulation from pumps, gets flooded periodically from monsoons and normally gets cleaned annually. It hasn't been cleaned in two...well, almost three years now though. So it'll stay off limits until I can get that done. Especially since we do have a lot of dead/sick wild birds around right now and it's very possible a bird could be dead in the pond and not visible because of the plants.

I'm not sure I can physically do it because of my foot right now still. I normally climb right in there with a saw to chop through plant roots and remove all muck from the bottom ☹️.

There's test kits for water...it won't tell me the exact bacteria...but can tell me if I have a bacteria load.

The other problem I need to address is that all my new pens have wire that lets wild birds through. I got a good deal on them and thought they'd be wonderful...I'll have to think some on that. They are wonderful! But but...blah.

And we leave on a long trip Oct 3 or 4. I really don't have time for all this. But I'll have to.

And I guess the vets right...bird flu hasn't been a problem in AZ yet.

Anyhow, Schultz is the same this morning. Reduced appetite but eating and drinking still. Bad balance but no respiratory signs. His BMs are still better...not 100% normal but not squirts either and no bad worm signs.

He makes this adorable throaty chirr as we walk past him. Both my girls are joining me in cooing over him and encouraging him to eat and drink. So if love alone can help..... 🤞

Good morning gang & Happy Sunday!
Yesterday I let the flock freerange almost all day. What a difference no wandering dogs make. They are finally enjoying the yard instead of collecting in corners. Yippee!

I got my 70lbs of red bran stored. Thank goodness for my hoarding of cat litter containers and years of eating pretzels just for their containers, everything fit perfect... and I mean to the last flake- perfect.

DH came up and brought me some banana bread he baked 😁 . Right after his lunch it started to rain lightly, so dh started his long nap and I set up my machine to sew bags. With the awesome CBL of WI helpful advice my bags came out rockin'. They are taking me about an hour each and I got three done, 1.5 during DH's nap lol. So pleased and so grateful, I really needed her assist, world of difference ♡ did I tell you all that I was able to source bags from our feed stores? So, sewing thank you bags for them.

So, much of the same for us today w/ probably a little yard work. If it ain't broke... don't fix it.

Hopefully final word on motorcycle... who is now officially dubbed "Boo Bike". Mech will hopefully work on again Monday, this time he will bypass the STV to see if it is bad and if so, then we order part... and hopefully it's the last of Boo Bike's issues. Guess it is luck of the draw... so still looking at a few more weeks I am sure.

K. Sun is coming up. My 1.5 roosters are crowing and the coffee is good.
Have fun all, be safe too! 🌴 :frow

Forest looks sooooo happy 🤣. I almost forgot I was going to take a picture of my brooder for you! I'll have to do that today...but not til I've cleaned it 😁

Love the name Boo Bike! Hope it's fixed soon! I still love the image of you zipping along the mountain roads on your boo bike.

Well CnM, you are a hard worker and if anyone can do it you can and especially with the help of your lovely daughters ♡ who seem very willing. Oh to have helpful & willing daughters... *deep dreamy sigh*** You have a great plan of attack.

I've been thinking how I will try and protect my flock if need be and I'm thinking of topping off my run with shade cloth and maybe bird netting my fenceline and any chicken wiring. If not I'll have to spring for a big roll or 2 of 1/2" welded wire. Tricky business this raising chickens etc. 😕

Me too but now afraid my dreaming has jinxed it! 🤣 Well, it is the things that don't come easy that we appreciate the best. I do plan on lots of Boo appreciation in the years to come so I'm just trying to be patient, which is not my strong suit, just ask dh 😂😂😂
