What did you do with your flock today?

Latest batch of dwarfs are starting to hatch. ❤️ I keep hatching them just to see how true they breed since they're a landrace, they were my friends project birds, and I wonder where the blue genes came from since that seems to be unusual for the breed. So far they're very predictable both as chicks and adults but I've had a couple born looking a little different. One was that almost all white boy, one that grew up mostly white and gold with a few black tail feathers, and one that hatched last night that's only black and white. Usually the ones marked like that chick have brown spots as well. Kinda calico looking.

Betting it'll grow up all black and white instead of the usual tri-color. I've seen the black/white only birds in gene bank dwarf pics but it's the first I've had hatch and I'm excited to watch it feather and grow 😃. There's no black/white only in my original birds. Still not sure why I've gone nuts with these little guys but I'm enjoying them immensely 🙂.

They're actually my best layers and the egg size is impressive considering the birds size. I'm used to my oegb banties that lay poorly, though nice sized eggs for such tiny birds. I love the feed/egg production ratio these birds have. I still think my friend should have given them to an actual breeder, but I'm loving them. ❤️

Well, that's my chicken craziness contribution for the day! 🤣

Just beautiful! Thank you for taking us on some of your adventure! Those 2 do look completely different from what I can see. Most exciting!! 😆
Have to add a picture of my kids kitty. We let her keep an ornament she pulled off the Xmas tree ands been playing hard with. She's still spending part of every day carrying it around. It's starting to look well loved 🤣View attachment 3377109

If your birds are like mine, they will eat only what they want if dry, and leave the rest. Probably better as mash. My chooks gobble that up! I would add all that as I felt like it. Have a bunch of dried oregano from last season. Is garlic ok for them? I thought onions and garlic are a no no, or maybe that's just dogs.

Got my treadle feeders yesterday, DH assembled them, and I got to put them out this sunny afternoon. Just in time, as they had run out of food sometime this morning, and their crops looked about half full. Should have less waste from them flicking it out. There was a huge amount under their old Pvc feeder after I switched back to the mixed flock crumbles. It'll be a couple weeks of training before I can have it closed and keep the rats from feasting. I must have some dumb rats, as they go in the run, and then dig out of it? And also dig a tunnel from one side of the inside ramp to the other, a short distance. Went and collapsed all those tunnels, filled in, and put a bunch of rocks to block the holes after filling them. Still nothing trapped, either rats, mice, or moles. Got a baker's dozen eggs over two days. Does anyone else's eggs seems to start up smaller after a molt? My older girls seem to be laying smaller eggs right now, when they're normally an extra large size plus during regular season. This was their second molt. Welsummers, Black sex link, and ISAbrown. After getting XL- ultra jumbo eggs for awhile , it's cute to find medium sized eggs.

@Shetland lover I admire your obsession with sharks ESPECIALLY after Jaws lol. Most all people went the opposite direction after watching that movie 😂. I hope your DH can pull it off, your location is terrific AND the weather holds. A heck of a birthday present 🦈🎀
Yeah! My middle brother! He wouldn't get in a bath for months... 🤣

I routinely add a lot of those things to my chicken food - except the nyger seeds as none of them will touch them! Apart from the potential health benefits, I figure it helps keeps them interested by adding variety. As I mentioned before, mine won't suffer pellets - that's all that's left in the feed bowls at the end of the day and it does make me wonder how necessary they are to their diet?

I don’t have ANY plans of letting him outside right now. More because of the cold weather and the rain we are getting. My sister in laws parents have a 3D printer, I may see if I can do something like that for him if I need to.
I bet there's online plans for them somewhere. When i have more time, I'll see if I can find anything.

Oh I can’t wait to see how that one feathers out!! I’ve not seen any OD chicks come out black and white like that! That is very exciting! 😍
