What did you do with your flock today?

Oh gosh, what a whirlwind kind of day for me and it's not even over 😜

Great job on the framing miss @kurby22 . Exciting to see and I look forward to seeing more as you go.
Boy! All these coop builds and chicks makes me super happy I don't have either 😂😂😂 You gals can do all the hard work and rooster rearing lol. I'm gunna sit and stare at my blue egg.

Great job on another rat @Shetland lover ! You are on your way!!!

Sorry if I missed others exciting stuff. I'll have to look back and reread later this eve.

Photos to distract.... I should have taken a photo of the price of eggs in the store. ON SALE $8.69 with the $1.50 off. I can't believe people are not breaking down my door for these babies @$5 per dozen. Dummies lol. And they come with a free homemade bag! Well, finally got some calls after sitting on eggs for a few days

How sad is this. Poor Pukalani, I swear I saw a handful of feathers fall off with a breeze. Bad late winter molt ☹ poor baby

I just made him this bed frame for the back of my truck outta 1/2" pvc and the pad is AJs recycled mattress pad that has been 100% repurposed! He was my partner when I went to feed the big boys and store run for AJ this morning but mostly my constant companion while dad is on Oahu.
K. Gunna go stare at my blue egg again. TTFN!

Thought you guys might be interested in this. Was reading an article about these guys research project but can't share it. I was interested enough to look up more info and found some I can share.

These guys research subjects are chickens that only participate if they want too.

Really interesting ChicksnMore. Just confirms what we already know, that chickens are living, thinking beings with intelligence, complex social lives and emotions. They deserve our respect and to be cared for.

Just had another chick hatch that looks like Snug ❤️View attachment 3385920
They're almost all chipmunk chicks...but the third baby here is one of the kinda calico looking birds. So far all those grow up looking like mottled black breasted red birds!View attachment 3385922
Better pic of that chick. It's brown spots aren't as clearly defined as most are but I'd so love to know what the genes are that makes chipmunk chicks and chicks like this that grow up to look the same.View attachment 3385924
They're so beautiful! 😍 😍 😍 ❤️

I don't know why either! It really is a crucial component, especially if you are going to sell their babies! It sounds like you have had your share of grumpy cochins so I feel a bit better haha. It's not just me! :D I have found that the three OG hens I have are mellowing out a lot. They peck me less and like to sit with me a bit more often. Molly is my friendliest girl and she will sit on me, but is NOT a fan of me touching her! Brie, my baby girl from Emilio and Molly is really sweet and more friendly than her parents, but Ariana Sushi is a bit of a butt head in his juvenile state! My husband calls him Satan 2 :D (Satan has been lovingly given to Ruby the bantam Brahma). When Ruby is scared he lashes out, so I don't blame him. He also is now king of the bantam flock after a nasty fight with Rolly and Bruno and that has mellowed him significantly. He hasn't tried biting at me in weeks. Bruno moved himself to the big chicken run and seems to be fitting in okay with Spider and Emilio for now...once the mating season kicks in, I'm not sure how things will go. Might be time to rearrange things again. Once the Cooplex is finished I will have an extra coop and run at my disposal that I may use for a naughty roo or two. The d'Anvers are all the same color family right now and I am getting some black hens from the breeder when I go to the Fresno show in late February. My boys need more ladies! I am not going to do any serious breeding this year, just some test batches for fertility. Anywho, I love hearing about your flock, they sound so entertaining and well loved! :love
Thing is, even my grumpy Cochin have turned around with time, love and patience. I think nurture is as important as nature. As is being respectful in how you treat them. For all Pru doesn't like being picked up, she follows me everywhere. Gladys (my Shetland) also HATES being picked up so I don't unless she needs treatment. She loves interacting with me though and is never far from me when I'm outside. She's just always been a more independent bird. She will pull at my clothes or very gently 'goose' me when she wants attention.
I also thinks it helps massively that I only have a tiny flock of 6. That means each bird gets so much more attention than if I had a bigger flock. I also like to observe the dynamics and see if I can work out an individual chicken's motivations for doing something. Don't think I'm very good at that though! 🤣

I love hearing about all your birds too! I love all their characters, naughty or nice! And you have beautiful babies, you can tell they're show quality 😍❤️

How lovely! You are so lucky. And what a cute woof woof 😍
Oddly, I think Penelope is starting a late winter moult too! When she went to bed last night, I noticed she didn't have much in her crop and she hasn't laid for a week. Not very Penelope at all!
She normally has a crop so full she could do with a crop bra to support it and lays 12 days out of 14. Anyways, I took her in to give her something to eat and check her over. She hasn't been acting or looking ill but paranoid me has to check anything out of the ordinary.
I got her to eat some Garvo grain, sunflower seeds and live mealworms with no trouble so there's no problem with her appetite. No physical issues as far as i could tell and no signs of egg-binding. However, when I took her out there were feathers all over the kitchen. I'd noticed a lot of white feathers in the run but assumed they were from Ferdy having run-ins with Gladys. I've never been so happy to see one of them moult🤣
Great news on the blue egg layer! I miss Gladys' blue/green eggs over winter. Hoping she starts again soon!

@Shetland lover glad it's just a molt!

I luv how creative you are!!!

Yall...I was raised ya don't say u gonna do something then not follow through with it!
That is the hardest thing to change once my health went downhill...I've always been a person of my word...til I couldn't.
It took me years of still trying to finally realize I was making myself worse because i couldnt say no or that I wasn't able to.
I still have a hard time not doing more than I should but...Yolo!
All that to say that I am so frustrated at not only the contractor we looked into and had good reviews...even have a contract with and still...no show!
Each day he says he's coming or he was on phone with the state about his licensing, etc. Always something or just nothing at all!
Then on top of that my husband's brother said he would help with moving our wrought-iron fencing...DH agreed to let him borrow money and then he's a no show!
I'm just really frustrated, mad and so disappointed in people!!!
I just wanna go off and live in the warmth of somewhere with my chickens!!!

Aw, that's awful 😞. Did you already give the contractor part of his fee? If not is it possible to void the contract because he's failing to show? Hope that works out ok for you. :hugs
