Idk if it's from my being sick for so long with sinus infection and the constant coughing or what but I am so bummed...from the dudes still not even half done with the backporch to 2 shell-less eggs this morning and the 60+ mph winds yesterday that wreaked a lot of havoc and not a drop of rain or clouds with em! Just straight up constant winds.
I pray yall have better days than mine has begun! Gonna get off here n go praise Jesus in hopes He improves my attitude!

My flock is doing great. They got 3 old hamburger buns that I broke up for a treat for them today. The chick's are doing great. No poopy butt's and they have been active in between their naps.

Thanks. It's from the 1800's. I got it right before my first kid was born. Was going to refinish it and here it is 28 years later and I never have. I just like it as is.

Back to sewing bags, then rode Boo up Koke'e to refill feed container and toss some treats to the boys.

Yesterday I picked up 12 sheets of used 16' corrugated roofing tin that is now sitting on my truck racks. Hope to share with a gal who needs to build a coop but I'm not delivering it to her. Metal is a bit long for my racks. Will take 4 sheets up Koke'e where it may get used for a new coop. That would be cool but much to do b4.
Sure glad I don't have any dark chocolate, whip cream or banana deliciousness to pig out on. But do keep the photos coming because they sure are pretty.

I have 22 fruits on my soursop and my lettuce is big enough to keep me in salad for awhile. That is just going to have to be good enough for me

Wonderful on the sheet metal! I planted a bunch of lettuce cause the prices skyrocketed here...now the price came down and my lettuce is all little still...but I sure have a lot of it!

It did not garner the largest bid, though. Someone bid a cool $1000 for a berry pie. The auction made $8300.

Sounds like a good day to loose yourself in a favorite hobby? Take a nap, read a good book...? Those roaring winds can get to a person and lingering illness too. Hope you feel better soon!

Think I'm going to work with my spangle oegb's using what I read there. Sir ClucksALot used to jump up on me and let me groom him, make eye contact and greet me. I've always thought the one time he got scared when I was in the coop was what changed his behavior. Now I'm wondering if it's more about the hens jumping up on me for a little conversation and treats. I'm going to try treating SirClucks first and only giving the hens their treats on the ground near him. He's not bad for aggression but he definitly no longer appreciates my presence. He's a few years old but never too late eh. Sure will love it if I can get him back to how he once was.

Good job! I swear there is a conspiracy in my house every time I buy bananas. I think the guys purposefully leave 3 so that it will magiclly turn into banana bread muffins. I hate to waste anything. About those best by dates. Glad he's learning. I have used a bunch of cans of stewed tomatoes a year, maybe two past the date, and they still tasted fine to me. If the can is sound, I check it out. If taste if bleh, chickens will eat almost anything. No moldy or spoiled food, though. Do they have many taste buds?

Quite right too! I was discussing the issue of food waste just the other day with my mom. She was brought up to view waste as something of a crime. She is a war baby (almost) and very much of the 'make do and mend' generation. Values she instilled in all of us. She was just saying when we went for lunch on Sunday how they didn't have a fridge until the mid 1960's so my gran bought anything fresh she needed every few days. My grandad grew all their fruit and veg, he raised chickens, ducks and rabbits for meat and eggs. He also sea fished. They were taught to rely on their senses to see if food was spoiled or not. NOT on some date stamped on it. As a result, there was almost no food waste, as like you, what was deemed not quite good enough for the family to eat went to the various animals. When i see these news items about how much food is wasted in the average household, it makes me sick.

I loathe other waste too. DH reaction even now is to bin or send off to the dump if something's broken, mine is to try to repair or repurpose. Or donate. I know it drives him bonkers that I won't bin it. Clothes is another thing I'm reluctant to throw away. If it's really too nice to scrap, it goes to a charity shop. If I think I can refashion, I will. My gran taught me how to make rugs when I was very little so I sometimes do that. Failing that, they get cut up for cleaning rags. And don't get me started on plastic!
And here endeth today's sermon....

Chickens do indeed have tastebuds, somewhere between 240-360 on average according to the breed. Broilers also have more than layers, interestingly.

Update on Pepper. The largest hard, ugly scab like thing sloughed off last night, still smaller ones to go. It is about half the size than it was when first happened. Urates sure are smellier than her poo. The Prep H keeps it nicely moist. It's getting easier to handle her, as I wash/wipe/ medicate 2x day. Not freaking out like at first. The removable shower has been super helpful. How are yours coming along?

Have you got a clear photo of the urates leaking? Just wondering if they are indeed urates as I've never noticed a foul smell from them. Could it be vent gleet (quite common after a prolapse) or even pullorum? Both can smell pretty nasty.
Sounds like everything else is on track though. Amazing work!

Struggling to stay awake til the rest of my families ready for bed

Today was spent helping a friend. She sent me home with fresh geese eggs as a thank you. My youngest thinks goose eggs are the best eggs boiled. No time for my own birds today so just a quick check that everyone's good.

That's a great article! I'm already seeing the girls being divided up between Ferdy and Stan. Ferdy is definitely keeping Pru and Clara as his girls and Stan is claiming Gladys and trying to seduce Penelope. When it comes to mating it's a total free for all!

I had one chick hatch with the yolk still out. It wasn’t very big and I kept an eye on her knowing that she could get pecked at. It started drying up and it was kinda shrinking. So I wasn’t too concerned. Before I could put them in the brooder (had it going and ready), the other Cemani, pecked at it. And it started pulling what I think is her intestines out. I honestly can’t make heads or tails out of what I’m looking at. I put triple antibiotic ointment on it and I moved the other 2 to the brooder and left her in the incubator. She is standing and chirping. Still moving around. I just don’t think she is going to make it. Breaks my heart. And there isn’t a dang thing I can do now besides try to make her comfortable as best as I can and just hope and pray that 1)she makes it and 2) it doesn’t cause problems later if she does.

On a lighter note, I sewed a puppy food bag today. Really in hopes that I could see how much work I needed to put in it and it went pretty good. A few things I will be doing differently than I did here. Also my sewing machine wasn’t working right so had to make a few tweaks but I think I finally got it.
