Why you mixing scratch with feed? I missed this one.
My chooks would pick out all of the scratch (make a mess out of it if they can) , burp and be done. Do I have uncivilized rogue agents?!!

I tried a new brand of feed that has quite a bit of what I would consider more treats than feed and that is precisely what mine do! So I had to buy a regular bag of feed and mix in with it so they can't pick it out as easily!

Ya know how we are all analyzing and over analyzing our chooks, their diets and behavior etc?
Well, up Koke'e last summer I tossed out my eggshells in the yard figuring the wild chickens would appreciate the bonus calcium. 6 months later shells are still there. Wild chickens, serious brooders, solely living off the land not needing additional calcium.

My DH n I were just talking bout the old days and what did people do...I bet they didn't need the additional calcium then either!?

Just went out to secure tarps for another round of daily rain If I have to endure the rain the least life could do is let me live in Western Oregon by the ocean!

As if I don’t have enough going on, I was asked to be a vendor at the next Poultry Expo so I’m going to sell quail chicks and quail hatching eggs! Wish I had some of your bags @TropicalBabies! I bet we could raise you a bunch of money for the kitties!

Nohope is still doing mostly the same! He got to travel to Fresno with us for the the poultry show and had ramen and Mac n cheese, eggs, and pizza crusts. This seemed to have renewed his interest in food! He’s eaten and drank water every day since, and yesterday he ate an entire serving of chicken mash! Not even two weeks ago he looked close to going…and now he’s eating and talking and his comb is more red than it was. This sweet boy clearly enjoys hospice!

Also did I show you the adorable picture I took on the drive home from Fresno? Ruby has indeed mellowed out now that his teenage phase is over and he is the most patient boy. He sat in her lap in the car the whole 3 hours. Perfectly content

Her love of the rooster boys knows no bounds. Wilhelm the Screamer and his bossy girlfriend Tanus are pretty adorable, they sleep in the nest box all snuggled together with his head tucked into her feather fluff. I had the audacity to discuss a bachelor pad and you'd think I had suggested Wilhelm be murdered for dinner! She sobbed for over an hour about the idea of splitting them up and making him lonely forever. Then she reminded me I rehomed Puff and Fluff got depressed, sick, and died. She spent the next 2 days giving me the evil eye and telling me I can’t ever split them up because they’re soul mates. SO…now y’all know why I have so many roosters and coops!

Yeah, I have to supplement because my birds get no free range time. The old days they would be able to find the calcium out in the free ranging landscape.

Thank you!! They are such cutie patooties! The chicks are Belgian d’Anvers! Porcelain colored and they are sooo lovey and snuggly We haven’t done diapers yet, just pee pads or towels in our laps for now Nohope may never want to be with chickens again so he might get one! None of the boys I have now are super naughty, but Ariana Sushi is trying hard to earn the badge! He’s in full on teenager stage!

Does anyone remember pogs? They were a big thing over here. All kids and some adults had to have them. For some strange reason these bags remind me of pogs...

So, scrubbed waterers, topped off feeders, reinforced a chicken door (wire had rotted out) so I could lock the chooks out of the garden area. I then cleaned it up and watered. Think I will keep them out for a bit to give it a rest.

My syringes were old and few. I tend to give away and lose etc. Think the gasket coming loose on one of the 2 3 mils I have left was my inspiration.
I use for tylan when sick or hurt but they come in handy for tons of stuff. Syringe feeding may be my biggest use. Be nice to have a stash of fresh sterile on hand. Like I said, grown-up lol. Not sure who's question that was as I have been peeking in but not had time to respond.

Morning after...I hate how seemingly the older I get the more anxious I get.
So much to be thankful for and too many much worse off than us!
They said no tornadoes but wind gusts got up to 79mph. So many huge trees uprooted everywhere and on people's homes. Carports and porches ripped off people's homes.

It was pretty nice here today....and the weather's supposed to be springish next week here. I spent the day working on my oldest coop rebuild. Mina got to spend the day out there with me again and her and Jazz shared the food bowl at dinner time. Shouldn't be much longer and she can move in with Jazzy. I'd still like her a bit bigger, but Jazz has gotten over the excitement of meeting someone new and they're both calm around each other so it's feeling safe.

Got a lot done on the coop but forgot to take any pictures! Still need to remove the extra wire off the run that's been hanging there for over ten years . I'm barely 5' so it's awfully hard to reach even with a ladder. Once it's down, that'll become the wire to close off the top of two of the ends. Then need to add the roof. Slap some trim on probably too. But sidings up, doors hung, and roof beams added.

Trying to decide how I want to redo the nest boxes. It was made out of old shelves and think I want to change it just a tad before I hang it. Add a taller lip so more of the bedding stays where I want it.

I gave the flock some bread crumb's late afternoon for a treat. I also got the laundry done. With this crazy weather we had I had to make sure that both the pants and short's were all clean. I got my egg's from this week all washed, dried, and put in the fridge. Just checked in on the chick's in the brooder in the other room, and all 6 of them are doing good.

@FBMcrazy8 was asking about some high protein feed to feed roos. Roos get 18%, and the feed label (which said layer supplement) said it was a layer supplement to mix with scratch. Does not have calcium in it, and she was looking for an option other than driving really far to TSC. Mixing to get down to the 18%. That discussion you must've missed. Lots of posts.

Thank you! ♡♡♡ I don't have the patience to go back to try and find what I missed. This thread moves so fast that I'd just miss the next batch of conversations .

I scraped boards, washed and refilled waterers and sequestered chooks for lunch. I also painted the frame on the new stand- gotta do some light hand sanding and then do the lettering so it is ready by Monday- Also got the bags mailed off... watched She Said (good movie ) and made a few meals for my honey.

@Shetland lover Is miconazole used for 7 days, like in humans? Pepper is slowly getting better. We're on day 4. Still has discharge, but seems less smelly.

@Gammas Bearded Babies , oh, my, what terrible wind! We have the same problem with gusts that blow the tarps, then the rain gets in. Glad you are safe. Did the shingles come off your roof?

@kurby22 , what a wonderful, compassionate daughter. Cuteness overload! Those chicks! Yes, do enter them in the contest. Hope the drenching doesn't last much longer. Nohope looks so much better! He's loving every bit of the attention and treats.

@TropicalBabies, how's the weather doing? We all have to take the good with the not so good. You have gorgeous, moderate weather for most of the year. Mosquitos and flies are terrible. You also don't have any chicken predators. Lots of delicious fruit. Oh, and look:

After the crazy rain/snow stopped, checked the kids. 5 eggs today. 2 yesterday. Gave them some corn, which the boys were happily showing the girls. My 4 pullets will be hens this week. Happy birthday to Topaz, Aya, Kogasa and Misty. The 4 Sapphire Gems.

I made a couple of these with the extra material. I also started making pockets in the bags. Helps to use material.

Yeah if he keeps improving I my try a wheelchair! He just built up the energy to come up over the box edge for a pizza treat…so energy is improving too!His last bath I cut off a bunch of his butt feathers and that seems to have helped too!

I have a huge soft spot for the roosters too, they’re so funny and filled with personality and the good roosters seem to mellow out the nervous ladies a lot! I wuv them all

That sounds so promising! Mind you, Ferdy loves pizza too. He'd climb over hot coals to get to it - literally. When i last made one from scratch he tried to follow it into the red hot oven!
