What did you do with your flock today?

She's doing great 👍. She has mites something awful on her head. She's so little I don't want to use chemicals on her, so rubbed her down with de. Think I'm going to rub just her bald areas with a little olive oil tonight to try smothering them.
Her name is now Snookums and she definitely likes all the attention. She was a frightened, wild thing and now she's calm and affectionate. ❤️View attachment 3436596
Oh, just look at her! Too sweet for words! 😍
Think smothering those mites is definitely the way to go. I wouldn't want to use chemicals on such a little one either. I know invermectin (which is what I tend to use alongside a great herbal product called Redstop) shouldn't be used on chicks under 8 wks and 400g.

O I like those! Bet they sell like hot cakes ❤️

Worried the Vaseline will leave her greasy forever. I've only used it on legs before so not sure how it'd do in feathered areas. Have you tried it in feathered areas? I'll definitely try it if the olive oil doesn't work. Hoping her skin absorbs the excess oil so her feathers can grow in clean.

So glad you don't have to worry about flooding at least! Poor chickens!

The way you work, I'm sure if they're available, you'll find them! Need to try harder.....🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I have used Vaseline on their feathered areas and it is greasy but not for terribly long in my experience. Poor sweet Snookums! She looks so happy now 😍😍

Rubbed Snookies head down with Vaseline. She really seemed to love that...think she thought I was giving her a massage. Went a lot lighter then I do on legs! Found a couple mites I missed when I went over her with tweezers the other night and plucked them. The nits are well covered though so hopefully we don't end up with a thousand mites hatching off her. I rarely have to deal with mites for some reason. Not sure if our weather makes them scarce here...but something keeps them away. I've never seen a bird with so many nits! Wondering how in the world poor baby ended up with so many!

today i came out side to my chickens at around 10:am They have an automatic door which means they can go freerange the moutain sides i call home and then my heart skipped a beat. As i got closer my Breeding Colombian Sussex, Herry was covered and i mean covered head to toe in blood. I imedeatly though wait are all the hens here. They were all her no blood so sickly hens. Just a very bloody rooster. Then out the corner of my eyes hiding in the feed room was Darcy my second rooster i was planing on starting a separate breeding project with. He was standing behind the feed bin and imediatly ran up to me when he saw Herry walk back up into the woods with the hens. I raised darcy along side his mom our french cuckoo maran who went broody last spring. He will let me hug him so when he ran up to me in got on my knees to give him a hug. But then i saw he had about half his hackle feathers on his neck missing and he was covered in blood. from chest to his comb. I quickly stoped this hug and ran inside to get my mom we cleaned him up after he gave me a hug and i picked him up. we put some blue healing paste on all the injuries on his fave and come and put back in his reinforced pen. We also despurred herry so he wouldn't hurt the hens. However if we haden't Darcy most likley would have been killed by Herry. Also, yes Herry is the giant rooster in my profile picture.

I have seen broody hens get covered badly. Maybe her mom had them and passed them to her chicks if she was hatched via hen?

I'm glad she liked the Vaseline and I hope it helps. Tricky business chicks and bugs. She is lucky to have found you ♡♡♡

Oh, poor baby! He looks so beaten. My old roo, Leo, looked like that after he went a round with Gladys, my Shetland hen. She hates roos! Apart from Stanley, for some reason. I'm sure he'll heal up nicely. Leo had half his wattle torn off, there was blood absolutely everywhere as it's a highly vascular area but it cleaned up and healed well.

I'm glad too hear that you rooster is okay and My Mr Darcy will be okay. He got cut in the throat and we were able to stop the bleeding ands everything is scabbed now and he's crowing again.

I would def keep those 2 separated forever. A throw down like that is not good. Jr obviously did not get the message Sr was sending or Sr is a total jerk.
