What did you do with your flock today?

Terrific day! Sunny, warm & breezy. Girls wandered all day till 6pm. I deep watered a few palms so the chooks could step in puddles and look for bugs, emptied 1 compost bin and tossed out some BIG bugs for the gang 🪳, then Manono hung back with me this eve so I grabbed some fresh mealworms as a needed protien bonus for her. My little special cutie.View attachment 3470643

Also sewed the heck outta bags. 6 finished and 4 washed and started, just gotta put them together and sew. Realized I am close to making $1,000 for my nonprofits! That feels terrific and forward, also sewed two new styles and that always makes my toes wiggle.View attachment 3470638View attachment 3470639
Sold 2 dozen eggs, girls gave me 20 today! Clean perfect shells 👍flock is 100%.

Congratulations! Nearly $1000 is awesome! The new bags are really cool and Manono is looking fantastic ❤

Ouch. That sounds really bad 😔 Have you tried dipping in flour or corn starch? Another way to stop bleeding is to wrap a bandage to apply a little pressure.
I dipped Sylvester and Leo's toes in a mix of cornflour and antiseptic powder when I over-trimmed their nails. They bled so much but it worked a treat to stop it.

It's weird cuz before I left him it wasn't bleeding...then to find that this morning was very disheartening. He's such a dang turd too that he's making it extremely difficult to treat him and do what he needs- especially with everything else we got going in!
The area is so vascular that he just needs to have knocked it in the night to make it bleed like that again. Poor boy, clearly doesn't know what's good for him!

I hope you all get well soon ❤

My husband gave in to chicken math. He said we had enough (with 20 chickens & 2 turkeys). When we went in to CAL Ranch, we came out with 3 french pearl guineas, 2 light brahmas, 1 golden comet, and 3 assorted color laying chickens (no idea the breed). So we set up the baby brooder again. Plus he gave me permission to buy frizzles if I see them this weekend at the Chick Days event.

Tonight I will be measuring the fenced in area to start building chicken shelter/playground I want to build.
I wish my DH would fold so easily in the face of my poultry obsession! I am allowed no more chickens or anything else. He's such a spoil-sport!

Welcome, btw!

I will! :D I am thinking about offering coupons for later in the season--if I only have 20-30 quail and some of the chicken eggs...and sell out I could do a 2 for 1 sale or something if they come back to me later. Will depend on how sales go!

Yeah the rats have really made my life miserable lately!! GRR. I found some eco-friendly rat poison that won't kill things that eat them (corn meal and baking soda mix), so I'm hoping that has some success too. The traps are working periodically, but not completely. They seem to have learned quickly and now avoid them! I wish that wasn't the case because the traps feel more humane and I hate doing things that cause pain and suffering...but my Earl the Pearl was taken and missing his head and that image was enough to bring on the poison. I also dug out the soil in their pen and laid another layer of hardware cloth and covered them with bricks and then reburied them--and poured the poison in the holes they'd made...so hopefully those that survived feel a bit safer now. I am so sad and carry a lot of guilt :( Earl was just a super sweet roo and I feel so bad his life ended so horribly :(. But it is the life of an owner of prey animals I am learning...never really gets easier though. This sweet girl came to greet me when I brought them treats the other day. She’s so sweet 😍.

She's a real honey! Absolutely gorgeous
Wish I was allowed quail....

Well can't sleep...stupid hormones
Anyways...ole bootyhead Joey is surviving n I guess worse than ever. Idk what to do with the turd. DH is ready to kill him but he wouldn't really kill a fly (remember he tried to put our poor old blind cat out of it's misery after our rottie crushed his hips and he turned his head to shoot instead of looking and the poor cat meowed)...DH too kindhearted sometimes lol. I had him listed AGAIN for sell...for free but no takers...not even a response from a local sanctuary on suggestions even.
On a side note QUESTION: my boys have gotten bad about crowing off and on during the night. Why!?!
They seen to do it worse whenever they sleep on their coop porch rather than inside the coop.
With temps warming up I have always let em sleep on this 10' long porch (all secure inside their run) rather than in the closed up coop due to our insane humidity.
Any thoughts on night crowin?!

@FBMcrazy8 I am so sorry bout the lil babies!!! I was just gonna ask if this was your first time letting hens hatch n be mommas...so hard to know how they will do til you try.

@PopoMyers congrats on the progress with your hand!!!

No, did not make the pots. My DH did plug the blue So I could keep fish to help with the mosquitos.

Joey, Joey, Joey. :barnie He certainly does not win any perfect rooster awards. I'd keep the add up. It is always darkest before the dawn for me when it comes to boys. Post with the feed stores, tell everyone you know. It will eventually happen :fl on the universal timetable...?

Oh goodness we had a lot of rain yesterday, so bad I did no even collect eggs. I was pleasantly surprised but my chickens unimpressed. Poor things were sopping wet on their roosts last eve with a ton of mosquitos attacking. I sprayed them and had the fan on a low setting pointed a little more away as I did not want them to chill. All zappers and dyna going, too wet for punks. Super good news is I got notice the bait stations are on their way! So excited! And thank you again @Gammas Bearded Babies ! I will (of course) keep you all posted.
Well, we are going back to a drier weather pattern today so I will hang the last of my sticky traps to pick off a few more of the masses. Also reset the fly bait stations.
Coffee, laundry and clean up is all I plan on doing today 😋☕

Mine haven't ever night crowed - touch wood!. (I've often woken up from nightmares where they've woken the whole town and the police have arrived to arrest me and them, however! )
I understand it's usually things like headlights going by on the road or predators coming too close - in essence, doing their jobs and warning the flock. Other than trying to figure out what they're reacting to and eliminating it, not sure how you'd stop it other than locking them in the coop every night. Sorry, not much help, am I?
