What did you do with your flock today?

I captured some of my wayward Jersey girls but while trying to get the last one to go in the coop 2 got out. There are still 3 running wild. I have a plan to get them where they least expect it. They like to pilfer a coop with Cornish girls and when I hope it up they normally go in and check there feeder. I hope this is a slam dunk and they are caught.

Good morning gang! Waiting for the sun to rise, just about time for coffee 😄☕

Down the mountain yesterday, I scrubbed the dbl brooder and coops (cept my rooster coops) and even pressure sprayed the roofs, shade cloth & dust barrier. Was great to be in one of my favorite places taking care of it ♡ No nefarious bugs crawled on me 👍👍

Cleaned windows, front & back lanai, plus go all garden beds cleaned out and 20 bags of mulch spread 🥵

My time with my chickens today will just be via security camera again, I go down for a hopefully second to final clean inside cottage. I'll have to fire my dh outta the house cuz I don't have that luxury of him slowing me down. He is due for a break anyways.

Just got my flock squared away. May take down the littles on my motorcycle (😂) as a tomcat is sticking around this morning and don't want to risk it. I put out extra food but it was a rough night sleeping with all of the warning calls. Will trap him and get him squared away in a colony as soon as I get a spot. Good he knows food- not my chicks -is here, will make it much easier.

Feral momma made it off the roof. Think she has 11 chicks. I will take down her food and water and I wish them luck ♡

Have a terrific 🐔💕 day all!!!

I'm so used to all my chickens putting themselves to bed so I'm wondering if you keep them confined to the coop for a month before letting them free range? Wondering if there's some way to make your life easier by getting the chickens to help you out a bit.

I've been working on the run for my chickens, first babies I've had in a long time. Roberto runs up to me every time I open the top of the tank we're using for a brooder... he's decided he likes to sit on my head. I know in my mind that his amazing personality will change as he goes through roo puberty, but I don't want him to change. I love his sweet little fluffy butt just the way he is.View attachment 3597194

Some times they do, sometimes they don't. My australorp roo thought being carried was the bee's knees when he was younger, and used to hop on to me and my hands. He now thinks I'm better off when viewed from afar.
One of my orpington Roo's got into a fight with another roo when he was very young, and got to spend some time with me nursing him. He sits still on my arms like I'm a roost.
My flock leader thinks it's cool when I pet him.
They'll grow, but they tend to still like you. Typically.
... Though i also have a rooster that's mean...

Piggy came home from the vet early this morning. Looks like they drained and debrided the wounds. Lot of drainage going on. But putting the halter on him has made a HUGE difference in how well I can treat him. So I expect him to start healing faster. I was able to pack his wounds with antibiotic ointment this morning, whereas before I could only rub it into a heavy duty spray bandage sealed surface.
Think I've gone crazy...I'm getting rather fond of the little screecher. Something about his little black puppy like nose really is endearing. Still trying not to name him! But think he's got some good Mojo going for him. Soooo. Guess he has a name now. 😂 He's Mojo the puppy nosed pig 😂🐷

Just came across this random bit of funnyness and had to share. 😂

“Male chickens prefer new partners to familiar ones. Scientists call this salacious behavior the ‘Coolidge effect,'” Lawler writes. “During separate tours of a chicken farm by President Calvin Coolidge and his wife in the 1920s, Mrs. Coolidge remarked on a rooster that was busy mating. She was told that this behavior took place dozens of times daily. ‘Tell that to the president when he comes by,’ she said cooly. When the message was relayed, the president asked if the rooster mated with the same hen. He was told no, that the male preferred a variety of partners. ‘Tell that to Mrs. Coolidge,’ he responded.”

Morning! Sounds like you will need a big break for yourself after this funeral and all the family! You are going to be an exhausted physical and mental human after all that! I’m impressed feral momma got down and with all the babies!! 11 is Ian impressive clutch!! 😍

I got a lot of camera notifications during the night too, but I slept through them. Turns out a very good-sized rat got locked in the big coop and spent the entire night trying to figure out how to get out. :barnieEmilio just didn’t care about the rat one bit! I went out at 6:30 after seeing all the notifications and opened the coop door and it didn’t even leave! I had to go in the coop and move the feeder, and it poked its head out like “Hi, what’s up?” 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ Finally left…I should have found a way to trap it but I was in my Jammies and just didn’t wanna deal with it. Gonna have to either convince that fox to leave my yard or teach him how to hunt better—they are not scared of him. He was in our yard the night before last for 3.5 hours and didn’t seem successful at all! He’s very cute though ❤️

Shadow, the sweet stray kitten, finally got to see a vet and was given the green light as healthy and adorable 🥰 No fleas, no worms, no FIV and he now has a microchip, and another appt for neuter and second vax doses. Yay! The husband took him because I was running a work meeting and he texted to say there must be a “cute kitten inside” light outside the door cuz techs kept coming in to pet the him 😆 I wish it was easier to load videos, because Shadow was making horrific meows on the way there and back 🤣 So displeased!

Spent time with the big ladies this morning after harassing the rat, and got some good love and a LOT of complaining from my Salmon Faverolle, Goldie. She is really sweet and lets me hug her and such, but man can that girl complain! 😆 She looks like she wants to talk to me about my car’s warranty 😆 My faithful lap companion Charlie settled in on my legs and Mumble actually spent a good 10 mins on the arm of the chair without looking like she’d seen a ghost! She’s mellowing a lot in her older age! 😍 Super gentle girl, but she does NOT like to be touched and up till recently wouldn’t even get on the chair if I was in it. So I’m slowly wearing her down 🥰

Happy almost Friday all!

I wouldn’t be able to deny that piggy cuteness either!! Mojo is a great name 😁😁❤️

I had them coming to their coops until they were reaching maturity and then out of the blue they got a mind of their own. Once I get them back into there coop that's where they stay. Only the egg laying girls will get to free range. The breeders for hatching eggs will have a spacious run but they can't romp around as they please any more.
