One of my pullets roosted on a board last night and it laid an egg with no shell, not even a membrane. It was just the yolk and white. They have access to oyster shell 24/7. I guess it's just a new-layer thing, right? Her egg laying equipment will figure things out?

And on the same board one of them dropped a big, black, runny poop. Maybe it ate something that didn't agree with it. Maybe I should take a picture of it and post it if it would be helpful.

Other than that, got 6 nice eggs today from the 8 pullets. Haven't been out there in a couple hours. Maybe there's another one. Gonna go check now.

Took a picture of the black poop. And for what it's worth, all the chickens seem to be acting totally healthy.

Edited to add: I did a forum search for "black poop" and may have figured out the cause. Yesterday evening one of them spent a long time eating stuff out of one of the compost piles. It could just be the chicken gorged on a lot of black compost, so I'm not too concerned now. I'll keep an eye out for more. Hopefully the compost gave the chicken a good nutrient boost. LOL

It is most likely just her equipment working out the kinks. Happens when they're gearing up to stop laying too. Connie, my head girl, dropped a 'naked egg' right in front of me towards the end of her laying career.

I don't know as many survive their mom's weight as do. I want to build a small flock of light weight broody bantams and not let heavy hens set. I don't dare let a 10 lb Dark Cornish hen set. Big fluffy Buff Orpingtons still make me nervous. As kid I had a pet white rock hen that raised all that she hatched with no problems. I need to get a consensus on the better bantam mothers before I start down that road.
I vote my pekin girls. Pru is an exceptional broody and I'm positive Penelope will be perfect too, when she gets the opportunity. She's certainly dedicated, not even an atomic bomb would shift her when she decides to set.

So hot and sticky, yuck. Our weather is being effected by a passing hurricane many hundreds of miles away. Hope it brings us some rain but I highly doubt it.

Had to head up to change water and scrape boards this morning. Gave them some yummy egg and veggie scraps. Mountain flock is well and my in-laws are up there keeping them company.

Down here in sweatsville, I gave the flock cold fruit and fresh water a few times today. The young gals seem to be handling ok. Even handling the constant attention of little people pretty good. One little cockerel has been a favorite and all I can think of is how he will probably turn into a jerk roo after this lol. Pretty sure my granddaughter would dress him up in doll clothes if we had them.
Stepson poured a pad in my roo coop. I'll dig out some tile so they an place a few and I will mosaic the rest. Then it will be for foster kittens.
Cats are grumpy to be down the mountain and so am I lol.

PS. Forest caught a mouse last eve 😁👍
I miss when my kids were little and toted chickens with them everywhere 😂❤️ They gave some of the funniest names too...like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. And yes you had to call her by her full name please and thank you 😂

That's how the dwarfs are. I love them but I am getting tired of trying to break broodies. And it's never one...they go broody in groups. Determined little ladies!
