What did you do with your flock today?

Leaving on the 14th for about a week to attend a wedding so busy getting everything ready. I have to find pastel floral dresses for me and both girls, convince hubby to stop calling our relative bridezilla for asking we wear themed clothes (especially when her mom's on the phone), get the last of the babies out of the house, make a new map for our property, and figure out whats going on with the chickens I'm babysitting.
My friend was in a motorcycle accident and it's sounding like she has a long road to recovery ahead, so I don't think they'll be going home anytime soon, if ever. She has damage to her spine and might be paraplegic going forward. 🤞 that she recovers more thens feared, it's early so nothings certain except that she has a long hard road ahead. These are 20 some big chickens, and shame on me, but I really don't want to care for them forever. Sooo, hoping she decides on her own that a permanent home would make more sense at this point, but want to gently plant the idea of rehoming and then give her some time. She has an awfully full plate right now and there's no rush. I kinda feel like a heel worrying about how long I'll be caring for her chickens, but...I don't know.
Anyhow, that's tomorrows problem. So today is a property map, extra feeders/waterers dug out and cleaned. Older peababies need locked out of the baby area, and the youngest peababies need moved out. A closet check to see if I need to go shopping and a common sense chat with hubby...dress request is definitely ill timed since we leave so soon, but it's livable and we love her. And hopefully a little restful time with my animal babies too.
I hope your friend recovers better than indicated at the moment, fingers crossed for her...and you, think you have enough on your plate animal-wise. On that note, how's little piggy getting on?

One of my brothers gets married this month and his bride-to-be's own mom refers to her as bridezilla 🤣
I think that's a little unfair as it's not the wedding she's being OCD about, it's the new house and it's contents. She has very exact (and expensive!) ideas of what she wants in it. She really doesn't subscribe to 'make do and mend'. When DH and I moved into our first house, we were grateful for anything offered if we needed it, knowing we could replace it for something more to our taste when we could afford it.
At least she's not dictating what we can wear to the ceremony, pastel is my nightmare!

Oh wow. That is a lot, and bad timing... sorry. So sorry for your friend and I am sure under different circumstances you would have a flashing welcome sign, but we can only do what we can do and it is good that you sense your limit. Something will work out... who knows, maybe they are perfect helpful chickens and will be an addition. Hard to see around corners ♡
Would love to see a photo of your dresses ♡ Cool theme IMO ♡

So cool! 🐔💕 total chicken love.
What kine Beetle 🪲 grub are they? They look awesome fat.
Undoubtedly some sort of scarab beetle. If they were in the ground over here, I'd tentatively identify them as cockchafer or rose chafer grubs.

I love the fig eaters we get here. They're huge and metallic. Those grubs we get though I think come from several different beetles of different sizes. We get an awful lot of bugs... 😂

Mine too! I'm probably going to end up looking like a ball of cotton candy 🤣. But family is family :idunno . DH has a very honest tongue...just no blinders and not good at holding it when he should.
I'm hoping she does better than the expectations I'm hearing too. I don't actually know her very well...just through chicken stuff. Shes an adorable chicken lady...just babies her birds to bits...but that's about all I know about her. I can't even imagine what she's going through.
Piggies doing wonderful! He's finally fully healed. Not sure he'll ever actually be tame...but he'll eat treats from my hand and makes cute inquiring grunts when he sees me. Don't think the sanctuarys ever actually going to take him. Live and learn on what fostering really means 😂. So doing my best to get him to like people and asking around to see if I can find anyone interested in him. Think I might have a permanent guest here.

Made a 2nd feeder for the run so the low in pecking order pullets can eat at the same time the others do.
That is a must do around here even though mine are just foot loose and fancy free. I had to spread out both feeders and watering stations so everyone in the pecking order is taken care of. I'm thinking about building some hoop houses with no ends for feed and water for the free rangers during the day so if a rain comes up the feed doesn't get spoiled. Meanwhile today I caught a rooster in the wrong coop that is headed for freezer camp because I have plenty of Bresse roosters extra and walked him down to the new processing area and tried the the cones out for size. Now come processing day I want be guessing where to start.

Good on you! Chickens can be such bullies... well, at least some of mine can. Seems the lowest in the pecking order are the worst when someone lower comes around. 🤦‍♀️ embarrassing.

Oh, love this idea. For shade and overhead predators too! 👏👏👏

I rescued one really in shock pullet today. She had managed to get her head under the cylinder portion of a hanging 30lb feeder and was stuck. I just carefully separated the cylinder from the dish portion and picked her up and calmed her down and all is well now. Where there is a chicken there is a way to create a freak accident.
