What did you do with your flock today?

So... First chick from my second broody hen hatched this evening. It was the hen's first brood... And she attacked the chick.View attachment 3641816View attachment 3641817
So I have the chick on a heating pad and I'm eye dropping egg yolk mixed with honey and water in the side of her beak every 10 minutes or so. Figure I'll keep it up for an hour or so (possibly until it's actually dried off, depends on when I start dropping off)

I sprayed vetericyn on the wound on it's head and put vetericyn eye stuff in it's eye.

The chick just hatched, and when I go to bed, I'm going to put it under my other hen that has chicks...

... Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Good catch. I'd do what you are doing.

Not nearly enough! I think the chooks want me to get their little garden bed going. I need to make a little mesh frame that goes over the top so they can't scratch at the ground and they just eat the leaves. But here's a pic of the miserable flock!

🌺Happy Aloha friday!!!!
Going to paint shelves in the kitty condo, do chicken chores, laundry and sew bags.

Kitty condo looks pretty darn cool ♡ Should be done by the end of today if I don't get pulled away.

Played with my Lahaina son almost all day yesterday. So much fun💕. DH and I picked up a 200cc used motorcycle in brand-new shape for a song and I got to surprise him with it yesterday!!! 😄 It was a good day to be a mom. He practiced and practiced and then practiced some more. He needs to be able to ride up and down that mountain comfortably asap -for his sanity.

Also need to get some updated photos of my 2 cockerels and freshen up their add, collect and sell 2 doz eggs. Sold 6 dozen this last week!! Did not know the girls had it in them. 13 eggs yesterday from up and down the mountain 👍

Mazie, has been roosting in the coop all by herself for the last few days, (I checked on the camera a few times yesterday) so gave her a physical last eve when I dropped my son off. Crop was full, eyes were bright, feet and bum ✔️, no bugs, feather condition is terrific... moves quick. She is 6yo and is entitled to have resting days, but I do worry. Surprised my old broads have been doing so well.

I'm not sure, but I think that one of my pullets is showing signs of wanting to go broody. She'll sit on the ceramic eggs for extended periods, and she grabs stuff with her beak and throws it over her back, like she wants to build a nest. She doesn't mind if I pet her when she's on the nest, so there's no protective behavior. Does this sound like broodiness, or is it just normal chickenness?

My hens tend to kind of go broody for a few days (sometimes a week) before they actually commit to sitting on a nest. I know if they're broody when they stay sitting on the nest when it's bed time.
Some of my hens let me pet them.
How long is she sitting on the eggs per day? If its a couple of hours, it might just be normal chicken stuff. If it's like 6 hours or longer, she is probably working on going broody.

Sounds like she could be having trouble with an egg? Pop some calcium down her throat 1x per day for a couple days. Keep your eye on her ♡ won't hurt her to have extra calcium no matter what.
Just thinking back to your 8 eggs, 8 girl post earlier... could be thinking about going broody. 👍👍👍 So maàaybe ixnay above. Just food for thought. I'd still give calcium.

I've just came in from morning rounds and It's been a sad morning after finding one of my big girls dead. She had came down with water belly which is normal for her breeding. I'll miss her but must carry on with the rest of the flocks. I had a visitor last evening and my Honey girl had to show off and fly up on my shoulder to get in on the conversation.

They're only 26 to 28 weeks old, I think. And it's just an hour or two I believe. I have no need for a broody, since the eggs aren't fertile. And I don't need chicks now anyway.

I've watched chickens on the nest when they struggle to lay an egg. This one is just calm and relaxed in the nest. Yesterday I wetted down some layer feed and mixed quite a bit of crushed eggshells into the mix, so I'm not sure calcium is the answer. I'll just keep watching.

I think it can be easy to overthink chickens, looking for problems when they're just acting a little different.
