What did you do with your flock today?

I let the girls and boy out to freerange at around 3:00. Kind of warm today but with a nice breeze. Visually the chooks were fine, so I stayed busy with my deferred housework. Family is coming for DH's bday on Friday

Finished my day with a long overdue truck wash. My "truck gecko" came out for a drink but quickly disappeared back into the engine compartment when finished. Obviously, I must have a lot of bugs around my truck cuz someone has gotten pretty phat.View attachment 3674243

Very sure my chooks are thrilled to be home. Wish they would start laying eggs though. Jellybeans may have just started her molt deep sigh. She lost a beakful of feathers rather easily from Beetle.

Looking forward to plugging away at more housework tomorrow. Love a clean and semi organized home.

I keep seeing videos of Ayam Kettawa chickens crowing...the laughing chickens. I have too many birds...I don't need more ....I don't want more...but O, I really rather want some of those!

You can't have just those. You need some long crowers to go with them. The ones when they crow they sound like the clutch is not all the way in when you are shifting gears. Imagine a gear grinding laugher if you were to cross them....

What's funny is the way those long crowers jump up and look around as to say, "No one saw me fall over".

I just let everyone out and Penelope, instead of going straight for breakfast, ran around the back of her coop and came back with a baby rat! She swiftly dispatched it by standing on the body and pulling at the head until it's neck dislocated. By this time everyone else was up and a "Benny Hill" style chase ensued around the garden. I wish I'd taken my camera with me this morning

I've turned the layers and the young hoodlum kids out to play in the sand and grass. I love the way they follow me around looking up to see if I might have a treat for them. I did go out with 5 or 6 boiled eggs this morning and Honey and Legs got some before they got surrounded with competition that moved in on their treats. I added a nest box for the Dark Cornish in another corner with some pine straw. Simple dark blue 5 gallon bucket with a few holes drilled in it for some ventilation when summer heat returns. Now the trick is to get them to use it. It took 2-3 months to get them to use the first one I put out for them. They do make me laugh when they toss out the fake egg and leave a nest full of real ones.

I got out for a walkabout with my camera and took some kiddie pictures. At least some hens and pullets cooperated and posed. Roosters were the shy ones. I need to fire up the old laptop that has photoshop on it and a chip reader and crop and size some pictures to post.

What can I do for her? Labored breathing, cannot balance to sit up, cannot hold head up.

I had the chooks on the other side of the run, since the main coop was drying from mite treatment yesterday. Something got in last night and killed 5, injured this one. Just a small amount of blood on her neck, but no other outward injuries. I'm wondering if the predator dragged her by her neck. I thought she was dead but she was still breathing.

So frustrating. Makes me want to give up.
