What did you do with your flock today?

If all goes as planned we have a small area of almost 1/2 an acre under some pines and a pecan tree we want to have as a show case with Indio Gigantes. It needs to be fenced with strong field fence and an electric fence to keep feral dogs and coyotes out. I can picture roosters 3' tall with a tribe of hens each on the grassy areas. They might stop traffic. Wish I could charge for the photo ops.

That will look quite stunning! I'd certainly stop and look!
Was once nearly 2hrs late for work because I stopped to watch a mare give birth in a field. The front hooves were just popping out as I was passing...

Oh well. I like talking chickens so this seems like the place. I’ve read some posts but it’s quite a bit to catch up on. Ok if I hop on now?

My newest chicks are a week old today and happy to report they hate me just as much as my first flock did at this age. Tried to do my daily butt checks and one managed to get out of the brooder and run behind my fridge garage. So that was fun! Why do they think I’m trying to murder them? My older girls are 24 weeks and 2 out of 5 are laying. Today my barred rock squatted for me so I’m expecting a 3rd layer any day now! My Easter egger is getting nice and red so I’m expecting her to start soon, though I can’t really tell with that breed. And my buff Orphington is taking her sweet time maturing. She’s still barely turning red in her comb.

Please do! We love new people who enjoy talking about their daily lives with their chickens! The first time they lay eggs never gets old for me! I have a whole bunch of bantams that just reached laying age and it’s like Easter every day! Most of them are Ameraucana or mixed with Ameraucana so it’s all shades of blues and I love every tiny blue egg I’ve found

I love reading about your kitty rescue.

We moved here in 2006. In 2007 a stray gray tabby had a litter of kittens under our shed. Before I could trap her she had a second litter. I did manage to trap/TNR most of her kittens. For a short time I had 8 cats hanging around, but the attrition here is high. The tabby, Momma Cat, and her eldest daughter, Mittsie, were residents until a couple years ago. Now that they're gone the ferals are moving in.

So I am feeding them canned cat food to get them used to hanging around and eating here, the easier to trap them.

Little calico came up and started eating while I was still standing there.

The white/flame-point was more hesitant, but definitely less scared.

Our local spay clinic has a weeks-long wait for appointments, so I am going to make a couple feral appointments and work on getting these kitties more comfortable around me before I trap them.

Oh, and the white cat likes to watch my flock. Typical cat fascination for birds.

Your babies are beautiful. I am so glad they found you and that you know what to do ♡ I'm sure they are good grateful company ♡♡♡

Oh gosh, not so fun. Hurts more as we age.
One day my husband was at the pasture and managed to step on a pile of fire ants and get stung all up and down his leg, get stung by a centipede on his hand 5 minutes later... and something else equally painful, can't quite remember at the moment. Ill add when i do remember. Less than a week later he broke his hip
Maybe I am the one who should take out a good insurance policy on him...

Your husband sounds like my son! He finds every possible way to injure himself…one summer he managed to get stung by wasps on his face 3 times while swimming in our pool. He has been injured by a ball of every sport he’s played…one time he was hit in the head by the basketball TWICE in the same game through no fault of his own! I don’t know how he does it!

I think I’d up my policy on that husband of yours! Mine is convinced that I want to up his policy so I can afford my land for more chickens and mini cows. He said he’s seen enough Datelines to know what to watch for I mean…

Hombre is still in our pasture and we are still caring for him. At least till the end of the month. Not sure if he will be staying in that pasture still or moving to greener ones on the other side of the isle. So, I think it just has not hit me yet... when I do think about it I know it is for the better. Hombre deserves young people and I really liked their kindness. My husband CAN NOT get tossed off a horse again, so removing temptation.View attachment 3683426

The bike has been a few months coming. Lots of research and chatter about it. I ride much more than my husband does and he knows I'm ready for an upgrade. I'm really thrilled he is supportive and even instigating this upgrade. Maybe he took out a big life insurance policy out on me I was pretty mad at him for getting hurt again...

I feel like our life got stuck in second gear. Caring for horses takes an enormous amount of time and really has dictated our last 12 years. A lot of fun adventures, but almost a full time job that sucks your money. Even mowing the lawn id have to move the horse trailer by hand that gets old. So, yeah, it's like a new chapter or finally getting into 3rd gear. We will always be able to go visit and even ride. Not my husband though, lol. He's grounded.

Hombre really is a pretty boy I do understand removing the temptation from the husband though And I know horses are a big expense both in money and time…so it’s good that you have a good perspective about it! And it’s nice you can still see him around and feel good he’s going somewhere he will be loved

I can't do much with any of the flocks yet except for the once coming into the world in the back room. When I set the eggs I had little hope for very many at all hatching. I've got 13 empty eggs shells this morning.

I wish I could keep chickens like this. Roosters, broody hens sitting on eggs, just letting them live a bit wild. But sadly I can’t do that in our neighborhood. My girls have to be contained and we can’t have a rooster. It sounds so exciting when folks like you describe their visits with their chickens.

I can't let mine loose, either, but there's no rules against roosters in the county. I have two, well, cockerels, but the alpha boy Joel is the only one crowing. Samuel is keeping a low profile.

That's so sweet of you...thank you for the encouragement. I sure hope he makes it. Amazing how fast you can get attached to an animal isn't it. He's still working hard at it. He's a little more tired eyed than at hatch but still looking hopeful.
