What did you do with your flock today?

I didn't do much besides feed and water today other than repair a leaking water line. I paid Legs a visit on the roost tonight and game him a little back massage.

Legs is becoming such a handsome gentleman! Being raised by a gentleman, no doubt. Your wife must have the most tasty treats if they flock to the wheelbarrow.

We are home from vacation and I already have new chicks While in Leavenworth, someone on our local Facebook page that they had some Greenfire Farms Rare Assortment eggs hatch…and one was a bantam Bielefelder which I have been covering since I saw them as a new addition to their farm….but not for $99/each! This guy was willing to sell me his and at the time he thought he’d gotten two so I paid for two and he held them till today. Well the second one appears to be an Orloff, so I asked what others hatched that he still had and traded the Orloff for a Silverudds Blue (Isbar). So I headed to pick them up as soon as we landed Well he offered me all the chicks remaining—6 total for $30. How do you say no?? So I now have my first chicks of 2024—a bantam Bielefelder, an Orloff, 2 Silverudds Blues, 1 silver Spangled Spitzhaben, and something I swore I’d never own…a bantam naked neck! The guy seems to love his birds, but maybe in a different way than I do…they’re a bit thin, they were cold, muddy, and a bit hungry—but otherwise okay. They’re now tucked into the big tub brooder in fresh bedding with vitamin water and a warm brooder plate. They’re all chatty and pretty calm and like to snuggle . I’m super excited because I’m sure the Bielefelder is a pullet based on coloring, and I got Silverudds! I’ve wanted them since I first started with chickens almost 4 years ago. Now I have eggs in blue, brown, pink, cream, white, and GREEN! I think at least one of the SBs is a girl, the white and black one will need to wait longer to assess. The backed neck is a bantam Turken crossed with a bantam Phoenix and the only non-GFF baby and it’s super ugly but I love it haha.

The rest of the flock seems good since we got home (a good chicken sitter makes a world of difference!!) so I hope in the light of day tomorrow it’s still that way! We have a show this coming weekend, so not a lot of down time before we head out again. Just me and Aria for this trip! Should be a nice little girls weekend. Missing the snow, but happy to be home with all my feather and fur babies

Also, since we are getting freezing temps in a few days, went and put the heater under the water bucket, and turned off all the water spigots and main to the garden line. Lst year I had forgotten to do that, and one of the pipes bursted. Different weather reports. Some say snow from Thursday thru Tuesday, all say frigid temps, mine says no snow, maybe a flurry, but that was yesterdays forecast. I'll know the weather when it gets here. Meanwhile, I have less eggs. Only 1 today, and more potential customers asking if I sell them. It might be August before my new ones start laying.
For any of you experienced chicken doctors and nurses: Do I continue Olena's vitamin regimen until she is back to walking normally? She now only likes fermented feed, and of course, treats. Her feet and legs are more lively, but she still has balancing issues. Starboard list and her stern doesn't stay up.

Yeah I would keep up the vitamins till she’s fully functional. It’s likely helping keep her body focused on healing and not having to fight off any other complications from lack of any nutrients I’d think. She’s gonna be one spoiled girl from here on out

Thank you! Glad you are home safe and sound, and have new chickies! Always fun to watch them grow up into their big bird feathers. We are bracing for the worst. Glad I do not live on or near the Cascades or Olympics. On another note, the ski lift operators are ecstatic, as are the winter sportsmen.

Flutter, flutter, thud, scratch scratch. That's what I heard when Olena flew/jumped out of her sling box, which I had set on a chair, and landed on the floor. She proceeded to make a large poop. Saved her from it, but decided to wash her bum thoroughly, and clip her wings. Getting stronger and more feisty every week.

Ooh! She's doing better every week. Go Olena!

Also, since we are getting freezing temps in a few days, went and put the heater under the water bucket, and turned off all the water spigots and main to the garden line. Lst year I had forgotten to do that, and one of the pipes bursted. Different weather reports. Some say snow from Thursday thru Tuesday, all say frigid temps, mine says no snow, maybe a flurry, but that was yesterdays forecast. I'll know the weather when it gets here. Meanwhile, I have less eggs. Only 1 today, and more potential customers asking if I sell them. It might be August before my new ones start laying.
For any of you experienced chicken doctors and nurses: Do I continue Olena's vitamin regimen until she is back to walking normally? She now only likes fermented feed, and of course, treats. Her feet and legs are more lively, but she still has balancing issues. Starboard list and her stern doesn't stay up.

Definitely keep those vits going, imo. Especially the vit B and C as they're the ones that'll help most with her neurological issues.

O that's exciting! Your egg baskets become a rainbow... delightful . Glad you're home and everyones safe and sound. You're new babies will be plump and warm in no time. It'll be fun seeing all your new babies as they grow!

I'm cautious with vitamins and try to use natural foods to do the same job. Some of the vitamins are bad in excess. But in Olenas case perhaps. I agree on C... there's no known excess limit with it. B vitamins are trickier. Some there's no known limit on and some there are. So those might be ones to try supplying through feed. I'd add taurine as well. Taurines another one you can't overdose on and a major nutrient to boost healing. There's been some interesting studies on taurine and healing, longevity etc.
I've been feeding Biscotti taurine supplements since hatch trying to boost his overall health. I buy it as a powder and sprinkle small amounts over his feed.
