Oh thanks but I'm losing hope with Eris. She's fluffed up and barely eating. She's lost 2 kg.

In spite of the treatment, she's walking weirdly, making weird noises with throat, and this is her poop. She hasn't emptied her crop since I fed her with a syringe.

Her digestive system seems to be shutting down.

It could well be as you fear or, given the amount of white urates, it might indicate a kidney problem.
I'm crossing everything she turns a corner soon

Well, this is her poop, 48 hours after the beginning of a treatment that is expected to last 10-15 days.

I won't say she's okay because she is still sleeping for the most part of the day, but this poop looks nicer, doesn't it?

I just need her to eat a little bit more by herself but her crop seems to be emptying very slowly.

I feel so badly for your Eris and you. I wish I could help, but I have no advice at all. Just hoping you and she can figure it out. Or maybe someone more experienced than me will come in with some great advice. She sure is pretty.

Well today was going to be a typical Thursday until the kids went out to do their chicken chores. Aria came inside and brought in Smoky because his “eye looked weird”. Sure enough…he had a giant lump of infection covering up 3/4 of his right eye I’m hoping I was able to extract all of the infection, it’s difficult to get at when it’s inside the eye socket! They realllllly don’t wanna hold still when you hold their head. He was a really good boy about it though. I can say I’ve come a LONG way since owning chickens…treating something like that even 5 years ago would have made me barf if I’d even been willing to try it. So I’m proud of myself!

I’ve also spent the last two weeks cleaning up the backyard, the pool area, and the house from ALL the chickens. I’m still about 50 chicks over capacity so still trying to sell birds, but all but three are outside and everyone has enough space to get by for now! It feels SO good to have my house back There’s a reason chickens are outside animals I haven’t totally shored up some of the runs that got messed up over the spring…I have random chickens roaming the yard that should not be…but otherwise I’m very happy with what we’ve done so far! I spent 5 hours last night putting together a buffet cabinet for the living room that now holds a ton of my chicken stuff so it won’t be in piles in the dining area anymore. I’m feeling like I have finally figured out how to have chickens without feeling like I’m also living WITH them

That's definitely better looking poop! Have you tried massaging her crop to speed up emptying?

I know exactly what you mean about living with chickens! My dining room is full of chicken food and bedding, not to mention cat food and litter! There's no space for us to dine in there, that's for sure

Poor Smoky! I bet he's enjoying the relief of having that pus out of his eye though. In many respects, the fact they have solid plugs of pus is a godsend in this type of situation - at least you can be reasonably confident you have most, if not all, out. Are you going to follow up with a course of antibiotics or just see how he goes? Don't they just hate it when you try to restrain their heads? I think the girls are worse than the boys, too - you'd think they were being murdered the way they behave! I've come to an accommodation with Ferdy over his daily eyedrops, he can be wriggly if you try to immobilise his head. Now I just hold him in the crook of my left arm (so his damaged eye is facing me), put my middle finger against the right side of his comb, which is his cue to stay still, then drop the eye meds in. No idea if it will work with anyone else though!
Great you've managed to get over your squeamishness too. Really helps when you have chickens, given how disastrous they are at keeping themselves safe and sound!

Wrangled 3 pullets out of the tree last night since it was dark when I got home. Good news of the day, a leghorn pullet laid a first egg today, and it was with the other girls' 2 eggs. Smart girl.

As one of those people who connects and commits totally to the animals in their care, I understand just how great the grief from losing them can be. Don't let anyone ever tell you "it's just an animal" or feel ashamed for grieving so deeply. Hell, I grieved longer and harder for some pets than I have some people!
