O thats wonderful! I reduced my flocks by about half. One of my poor neighbors has gotten so used to our free eggs and they keep calling and hoping. But...between less birds and cold weather, I just don't have eggs to spare right now. Yesterday he called and described in great detail all the differences between my girls eggs and store eggs as you crack them into a pan to fry. Yep...I caved and he got some of our eggs.We are lucky to get 2 eggs in a day right now. My girls think it's too wet or too cold. Well, I think it's okay for them to take a break and conserve their energy to cope with the weather and short winter days. So far have not had to buy eggs in 9 years, so I'm happy.
I think my eyes got frostbite just reading those temps! Brrrrrrrrr! It was -5°C outside for much of yesterday - I spent most of the day breaking ice on the waterers and making sure everyone got calorie dense treats. My flock got warm whole grain porridge, sprinkled with blueberries and sunflower seed hearts, for breakfast. And a cup of warm ginger tea. It seemed to go down well. Little Stan took some persuading to try it but enjoyed it once he did. He is weird with new foods. If he doesn't recognise it as something he's eaten before, he won't touch it. I find this odd given that both his parents are willing to try anything. His dad, Ferdy, loves dill pickles, for example!
I have a friend who tells me every time I see her that my eggs are better than any others home grown in the area, and of course than the store. I still say no. I like them better too.O thats wonderful! I reduced my flocks by about half. One of my poor neighbors has gotten so used to our free eggs and they keep calling and hoping. Stunning! I think if I lived there, hubby would have to drag me off that mountainOh, I forgot a bit of my story.
Driving up Kokee I was in and out of clouds spilling over the ridge from the canyon lookouts. Truly stunning to be in a tropical rain forest during inclement weather. View attachment 4022285Road heading down to the cabin as a cloud was blowing by but getting captured by the trees ♡
I will come back for this little broody chicken. Beetles daughter, feral mom. Not sure how many days she has been sitting. Hoping Beetle is the dad of at least some of these chicks.View attachment 4022278View attachment 4022280
Can you spot her on the roof?
I miss so many things about staying up the mountain but playing egg hunt and find the broody arnt ones. Though it is funny.
