The laying houses don't want to invest the cost of the feed into the male Leghorns to get them to fryer size, particularly since Leghorn roosters don't come anywhere close to the feed to meat conversion rate that Cornish cross do.

Waste not - want not. I grew up in the time period when Cornish crosses didn't even exist.

These leghorn cockerels were the inadvertent 10 % that arrived with the sexed pullets. Their raising was anything but intentional.

I hear you, and I've butchered many a cockerel myself over the years that came in a batch of chicks from the hatchery. :eek:)
