What do I do for a possible infected oviduct???

I’m wondering if this hen is a Whiting True Blue? I’ve lost only three chickens in the past two years, and all were WTBs with very similar symptoms.

This egg was layed today. The girls got to it before I did. This is all that was left besides a mess of goo on the floor of the coop. There is a remarkable dark spot on the shell.

Obviously I need to segregate her.

I would lean toward reproductive disorder and infection of some kind. With the odd egg yolks and swollen abdomen you can try antibiotics to see if that helps. Penicillin may not be the most effective one to use though. Baytril would likely be best, but keep in mind it is not approved for use in laying hens so do some research on that.

Here is some info on Baytril (enrofloxacin) to treat for reproductive disorders. It is used primarily because it treats E.coli, mycoplasma and other bacteria that may cause salpingitis or other repro disorders. It has been banned for use in laying hens for over 15 years due to growing antibiotic resistance. Many vets do ignore that and still may use it for treatment quietly, since very few antibiotics are approved for poultry, especially that treat E.coli. Eggs or the meat must never be eaten, very few studies on egg withdrawal are done. This product enroloxacin ((Baytril) is easy to use and dosage is 0.05 ml per pound or 0.25 ml (1/4 ml) for a 5 pound hen given orally twice a day for 5 days:

It looks like studies have shown that it remains in the egg whites for 8 days and the yolks for 10 days. I read there is also the possibility of antibiotic resistant campylobacter if eggs are eaten raw (assuming the chicken was colonized with campylobacter in the first place. I truly appreciate your help!! I will order that now!

I just completed the 7 day Penicillin G course. She seems to be feeling better, and her abdomen is less swollen, but there is still some swelling. I have not gotten another egg.

Should I go ahead and start a course of the Enrofloxacian or give her a few days to recoup from the Penicillin G?

Also, should I start her on a probiotic now or wait I am sure I am done with the antibiotics?
