Do not use, straw (of any kind), hay, or shavings. All ofmthese things trap moisture and grow bateria. No need to create a new problem for yourself.
You want drainage in a chicken run that is void of grass. Pea gravel and sand are both good for this. Even a base of gravel with clean sand on top is a good combination. If you live where yu soil is made up of lots of clay you will like the gravel and sand.
For how the run is currently, (dirt, no grass and poo) get out the old rake and rake the surface and even thnk about turning the top layer of soil. You can add stall dry, DE or powdered lime when you turn the dirt as well.
