What do I do when the eggs start hatching?

Oh ok then you have plenty of time

Are they sitting on new eggs from a new layer? If so some may not make it if the eggs are really small. I assume that you did not candle yet? At day eight be sure to candle and get rid of any clear eggs. I candle at night so I can see what's going on. All mine are alive, even my tiny cochin egg which amazed me. She is a new layer as well and I thought I would test the fertility. To make a cheap candler just get a meglight from walmart and put black duct tape around the light part of it about an inch up and set your eggs right in that little cup made by the duct tape. Be sure to get black tape..the silver stuff does not work well at all. And candle when it is really dark.

Alright, I will be sure to candle on day eight. Any other important things I need to do during the hatching time?

Shes sitting on three eggs (silkie and auralorp mix) and some store bought eggs.

I only want one or two more chicks, my 8 year old daughter missed having them around.

She would be devastated if mommy ate them

You know being 1/2 silkie I bet she will be a good mommy

Silkies are the best! And nope nothing more to do but wait and be sure mommy does not leave any eggs behind. Today I found my two eggs that my silkie was sitting on, on the ground! They are still both alive so that was close! not sure how many hours she was off them but they were cold already. I stuck them back under her and candled tonight to find two moving chicks WHEW! Good luck and if you have any other questions I would be happy to help you the best I can
