New duck owner this year!

1 of 3
I bought 10 pekin ducks from TSC. 8 made it through the mail. One after it arrived clearly had some problems from being shipped. 7 were A-ok! The one duck that was having issues continues to have issues with thriving and is still the size of a three to four week old duckling even though it is now minimum 50 days old! He has leg issues and can barely get around, but swims fine?

We think that we have 6 males and 2 females. A dog busted in their pen and tried to carry one of the females off. She swims ok, but will not walk. At first she would walk with a limp, but has kind of stopped putting weight on on that leg now. It also has a huge knot on its wing that my wife feels is broken bones that were not set right after the injury.

Assuming that I have 6 males and 2 females, or if I have to put down or lose the two ducks mentioned above, I will have 5 males and one female? I want to have the right ratio of male to female. They will have a large half acre lake, and 5 acres, (3 grass field, 2 Forrest) to free range in. I want more females for egg production, I assume I can buy full grown female Pekins? I assume I can sell or trade male Pekins?

I'm sorry to hear about your losses in delivery and also your problems with duck one and two. I don't have experience with the problems with duck one and two.

I do have experience with overmating, as my ducks were overmated before I got them and one requires yearly surgery despite having not seen a drake for over 6 years. I don't like to be absolute, but your ratio is highly likely to not work out. Usual recommendations are 4-5 or more duck hens per drake. Overmating can result in injury to the duck hen and we even get reports of death.

It can be hard to rehome drakes, especially if you are attached to them and are looking for pet only homes. Some people make bachelor flocks and have success. Other people find that drakes fight during breeding season. If you are looking for female ducks you can frequently purchase them on Craigslist. I can always ducks for adoption on Petfinder in the bird section in my area.

I have a duck in a similar situation to your second duck. Since the injury she’s been in our bathtub recovering. She’s set up in an way where she can always lay down and still have access to food and water. Over time she’s greatly improved. You could possibly try something like this to help the duck recover.
