I would just get a new heat lamp fixture, sounds like the one you have is pretty dangerous and that would be less expensive than continuing to buy those pricey bulbs. Cover the outside of the fixture in chicken wire to keep the bulb from coming in contact with anything. I never had any troubles with mine but if I was overly concerned with fire while I was out of the house, I might set the brooder in the bathtub. Good luck.

But In The Garage It's Always Around The 80's ! And Outside In The Balcony It's Always Around The 90's. And Their Going To Be 1 Day Old Baby Chicks, What Should I do ? should I Get A Umbrella And Put It In The Balcony Then But The Brooder Under The Umbrella Will That Work ? The Problem Is I Can't Find A Umbrella! And If I Leave Them Under The Balcony Then The Rest Of The Flock Will Bother Them !

If Balcony is in the 90's and not 120 degrees, it sounds better-- can you rig up a tarp for shade cover-- I cant remember if you have 2 groups of chicks (yes I thought you said you had a group of 5 older ones...)- my first set are out in their coop/ little run fulltime now but I am having to move the brooder around....there is too much of a size difference I think to have them mingle at this age....

Actually Manuel, if class is out by 2:15pm, and you can get home say around 3pm-- you will be getting home during the hottest part of the day and so can check on them (no afterschool activities for you!)-- leaving them in AM is the safest time of day I think-- it sounds totally workable....

we always left our heat lamp on and nothing happened.. we kept them in the garage and all was good
