Someone gave this to me the other day, no idea what I'm going to do w/ it. Thought I'd see if anyone here can tell me about it (it is a quail right?), any idea if it's a male or female?

So what do people generally do w/ quail? Is there anything special I need to know about taking care of it? Is it ok living alone or will it have to have another one as a companion?

Sorry if these are stupid questions, this was sort of unexpected.

Yep, that's a male brown (either jumbo or pharoah, can't tell from the pic) coturnix quail. Either get him some girls or eat him, that's what most people do with them

So how big are they supposed to be? Is he an adult?

I'm not going to eat him (if he's grown I can't imagine it'd even be worth it), don't really care to get anymore either, so not sure what I'll do w/ him. I'm guessing he wouldn't survive if I just let him go?

Keep him as an inside pet bird, since hes all by himself. And no..he wont survive. You have to keep him now..

He is an adult, that's why his whole face is red. It will change once breeding season is over. He might get a little bigger, depending on how old he is, but it won't be much, you probably wouldn't even notice it.
And no, he would most definitely not survive. List him on craigslist, or find someone on here from your area that will take him

Thanks you've all been very helpful!

Still don't know for sure what I'll do w/ him, may keep him for now or go w/ the craigslist idea! Atleast the kids seem to like him!

He wil probably start crowing a lot , they do that when they dont have a female... it's cute at first.. then gets irritating fast if they constantly do it hehehe

If he gets to annoying I guess he may get to find a new home, but so far there has not been a peep!

DO NOT TURN EXOTICS LOOSE!!! MOST STATES HAVE VERY SEVERE PENALTIES FOR RELEASING NON NATIVE ANIMALS(FISH AND GAME VIOLATIONS USUALLY MAKE THE PENALTY FOR DEALING CRACK, MURDER, AND RAPE LOOK TAME...) CRAIGS LIST DEFINATELY WORKS THO! IF HE'S ALL ALONE HE MAY NOT CROW MUCH....(HOPEFULLY) AND YES THEY ARE WONDERFUL STARTER QUAIL FOR KIDS, THEY'RE QUITE TAME AND HANDLEABLE. SOME EVEN DEVELOPE QUITE A PERSONALITY IF HANDLED ALOT.
