What do I have?

Thanks for everyone's help! I have a beautiful Naked Neck that I hatched myself in the spring! She is my favorite and would love some more!

^^ You might want to check this hen for scaley leg mites. ^^

As far as breed... They're mixes of some kind.

The hens have definitely been well "loved" by a rooster. If you want their feathers to grow back on their backs you might want to look into "chicken saddles" and/or anti-pick products (chickens love to peck and eat fresh baby feathers).

Are you quarantining them? It looks like the hens have had a rough life at their previous home. Who knows what they're carrying/been exposed to.

Lucky for them they'll have a better home now.

Looks to me to be run of mill Barnyard mutt's with a bad case of mites.

Hmmmm never even thought of mites. What does that mean and how do I take care of them? I do not have them quarentined. Should we dispose of their eggs? Now I have more questions and am a litte worried.

Do you have other chickens (before you brought these ones home)? If so, whenever you bring home new chickens, you should quarentine the newbies from the rest of the flock because they could be carrying parasites/disease that you do not want to spread to your existing flock. As for mites, if you take a look at their vent area, if you can see teeny tiny things crawling around down there, those are mites or lice. If you do a search in the forum for mites or lice, you will get lots of good info. Here is a starting point for chicken remedies in general:

Good luck!

I am a little disappointed because I got these from a guy I trusted and runs a big bussiness out here for eggs and chickens. I did not quarentine them because I thought it would be OK. (Dummy me) I will have to check in the morning to see what other ones have this same kind of "look" to it's legs. All the other hens I got were together in the same cage. Man, looks like lots of scrubbing needs to be done.

Edied because I forgot to tell you that I did have other hens before I got these.

I know what you mean... Last year I bought 25 hens from a very good friend of mine. I trusted her to only sell me healthy birds. Come to find out several of the birds had problems/were sick. One hen had an advanced case of scaley leg mites. She died a couple weeks later. One of the hens had a huge scab on her head from a close call with a coyote, and she died. Another hen had some huge scabs on her belly from a predator that must of damaged her egg factory, because she never ended up laying. Another hen was an internal layer. Another hen laid a total of about 10 eggs in the time I had her, and was also extremely flighty. So a year later, with lot's of feed into these three hens, I sold them for next to nothing as stewing hens.

I also got my very first chickens from this same friend. I got 12 hens and a rooster. One of the hens fell dead from the roost on night #2. Another hen laid nothing but soft shell eggs and was an egg eater. Another hen was EXTREMELY nippy, and laid small odd shaped eggs. Two of the hens were caked in lice. It's amazing I'm still so interested in chickens!

Why I bought another 25 hens from her after that first experience, I don't know.

I'm still very good friends with her (she's fun to be around and we have a lot of similar interests), but I'm never going to be buying chickens from her again.
