My chickens combs are getting chapped as the weather has become colder. I just took them to the vet and know that the dry skin is just that. I was thinking of using coconut oil I have on hand. Is that okay?

Doesn't vaseline just seal in the moisture? I want something that will moisturize. Besides, it isn't cold enough here to use vaseline.

I use vaseline too...but maybe you could use plain ol' hand lotion?

Neither vaseline nor coconut oil contain moisture; they will oil the surface up so you don't see flaky whitish skin, and they may help seal in what moisture is already in the skin, but it is not clear to me that there should be much of any difference between the two. Except the price. Personally I'd be saving expensive coconut oil for something where it is more specifically called for, and using the cheap vaseline on the hens

Good luck, have fun,

I use a mixture of berry and Vaseline it calms them and beneficial for the winter time for their respiratory system
