I placed an order with Welp back in April and my chicks are to ship today. I got a phone call from them this morning saying they were out of Buff Brahmas for the rest of the year due to hatching difficulties

She read me a list of ones I could replace them with and I picked Black Jersey Giants. I was looking for decent egg production and a friendly personality.

I've read they've got a fairly decent disposition. Does anyone own them and absolutely adore them?? I'd appreciate any comments/information you have to share!

I've had 3...Jemima, the top hen on our pecking order for many years. If you had food she was your friend. She was the 1st one out of the coop in the morning. A very lovely girl who only got snippy when the treats were out!
Olivia, a gorgeous perfect giant girl who was sooooo sweet! She would hop into your lap if you sat down, and preen your clothes. She was from Privett, and she won best american at the fair!
Norma, my newest one is a sweet 8 week old pullet who I couldn't resist! I am keeping her in with the banty chicks because she is such a sweetie she get chased by the one's her size. I'm hoping she'll be E-Norma-Ous like Miss Olive was...
They don't lay like a leghorn, but 5 eggs a week all winter makes them great to me

awe just recently (3 weeks ago) got 13 Blue and splash Jersey giants from a breeder. Ours are very friendly for chicks. We have a pair that are 7 weeks old and the others are 3 weeks old. I don't know about their grown personalities but when we were at the breeders, she showed off her SQ Giant Blue Moosier. He was so gentle She picked him up and even my grandkids could pet him and touch his waddles(he really loved that). Her giant was over 15 lbss and had to stand at least 3 feet tall. He was massive but so gentle.
I only hope our cockerel Colbalt will be just as gentle.

Thanks for the feedback!! The anecdotes were really great to read! It's nice to read more than just what the hatchery website or a breed book has to say. I was really bummed about not getting my Brahmas, but looks like it will hopefully work out just fine

If anyone else has any stories, I'd love to hear them!!

I have a very small chicken pen and there are three black jersey giant hens and a single buff orphington hen. They are in with a partridge frizzle cochin rooster.

So far, I have gotten very consistent egg production and they have been hardy. One hen went broody and hatched 5 chicks, now another hen is sitting. The only time they have been anything other than nice is when I took four chicks from the hen (with no problems) and sent my husband in to get the 5th and she pecked at him, sending him screaming......he is type who wears garden gloves to handle the chickens....

I really love them and the babies from this odd couple are amazingly colorful and different. Hope you enjoy yours!
