The area I grew up in they would call them either crayfish or crawdads (PA). As a kid I called them "headache fish" because if I ate even just one I will get the worst migraine that feels like my head is about to explode. Everyone thought I was making it up for the longest time because in their minds if someone doesn't stop breathing they aren't allergic to something. According to the doctor shellfish cause severe swelling around my brain and if I eat more then just one or get exposed to a lot of iodine I go from a migraine to actually losing all sense of taste and smell for 1-2 days. So "headache fish" I guess was fairly accurate.

I was about to say that sounds like an Iodine allergy. My friend homeschooled her kids and discovered she was allergic to iodine when they looked at her blood under a microscope. The kids were freaking out because the blood cells were exploding. She went to the doctor and they did some tests and she's super, super allergic to iodine.

That is a crazy way to find out an allergy!

So is my sister. She can't even handle breathing the air where shellfish were steamed/boiled. She carries an epipen.

Ok, dumb question. What does iodine have to do with a shellfish allergy? And is this the same iodine that cleans wounds?
