Our girls won't be laying until at least October but I was thinking about this when I read the stories about people putting eggs in their pockets. I want to get something to hold the eggs that my kids can use because the last thing they need to be doing is putting eggs in their pockets or trying to carry several with just their hands. I'd like something cute but would settle for something practical.

I have a lot of eggs to collect daily...usually about 2 dozen and that number will go up shortly.I bought the coated wire baskets from TSC.Little kids might have a hard time with those though...because they are deep and if you drop the egg in..it cracks.

I just use a plastic tupperware type bowl. Maybe your kids could use an old woven easter basket? The type with the handle. Some of those cheaper ones are pretty shallow, and soft which might keep the eggs from bouncing around too much.

I have a really cool, cute basket that I used to use to collect eggs, and ended up breaking a few here and there....so now I'm all boring and just use egg cartons, I know, HOW ORIGINAL!?! LOL

How many chickens do you have? I have 8 RIRs & before they started laying, I got this nice little basket to gather eggs in. Since I'm usually home during the day, I check frequently. I sometimes get 3, 2 or even just 1 egg when I go out to check. Those I just carry in my hand. Yesterday, I had 4 eggs at a time, plus a few figs I wanted to pick. I just raised the hem of my large T-shirt, made a temporary carry-all, and put eggs & figs in it. My DH said I so reminded him of his grandmother gathering eggs.

I can't even remember where the original egg basket is right now.

My MIL made me the cutest chicken apron with huge front pockets for collecting eggs.

And what do I do...I just gather up the end of whatever shirt I'm wearing that day to make a "nest" and pile the eggs in there

For the longest time we used a cast-off perforated plastic basket/bucket looking thing that the wife had bought long ago for the kids to keep their bath toys in. It held not quite three dozen eggs and worked well enough.

Now we're using a traditional egg basket:

Holds eight dozen, has proven to be durable, is easy to clean, and can be hung from a hook on the outside of the nest box on each tractor while she's putting the eggs in it.

They come in various sizes to hold from three to fifteen dozen.
