What do you do in the wintertime to keep your ducks nice and cozywozy?

I basically cover the outside pen in a heavy plastic, like plastic paint drop cloth and staple it in place. This works kind of like a green house and keeps it warm enough, or at least is seemed to last year. I also use a heated water container so that helped heat it up a bit. But mine are still free range during the day. They LOVE the snow!!!!!

I have runners who would rather be in the south Pacific! So they spend winter nights in their walkout basement pen. It's easier on me - we have the space, it doesn't smell bad, and I don't have to shovel a thirty foot long path through three feet of snow.

Downside: they hear my feet hit the floor and start calling for me in the morning.

I buy them all thick waterproof down coats that cover from their faces all the way to their legs, plus impermeable leggings. Oh, wait. Nope--they produce those themselves.

Seriously, they don't need much. Make sure they have a wind break, and maybe a cozy interior space to cuddle in. But they definitely don't need heat, unless it's antarctica. And even then, I have my doubts.

When the freezing weather approaches, I put a water heater in their pool and that's where they spend most of their time. I'm going to get full sheets of plexiglass to put next to the fence around the pool too - should keep the snow out and cut down on the cold air some. And lots of straw

The pekins I had last winter had a house and insisted on sleeping in the snow. I'm guessing they weren't cold.

Im planning on making a few small wood coops and putting plastic on the outside. I built a small wood shelter for my newley laying female and its so small and cozy. The only problem is it will only fit about 3 ducks! I will have 11 ducks! And I cant make them any bigger becuz its a pallet shelter. So I guess I will need to get building tommarow. I have 1 HUGE pallet that Im going to strip down and use the wood to make a really nice one. I will post a pic of the one i built yesterday tommarow. Its really cute though lol.

I just make sure they have a wind block to block the wind from coming into their coop so they could get out of the wind.
And fluffy and deep bedding is also important. The ducks last year would have rathered slept outside in the nasty snow than inside their coop (which is insulated.)
I actually had to lock them in every night because they wouldn't go in by themselves.
