Give him the hair of a silkie hen? Not our guy.
Silkie rooster is not doing his job with the silkie hens. He prefers the standard hens and I have never seen him with the silkie hens. I don't know what to do! The goal is to let these silkies hatch a brood this spring and sell all but one or two of the chicks.
For the last 10 days the silkie trio is in the breeding pen. I don't think the eggs are getting fertilized. I figured eventually desperation would win out and he would do his job but I don't think so. He does not seem stressed. He can see his other girls. The bullseye is absent from the eggs (as far as I can tell) from opening two.
The other day I decided to let the flock mix up in the grazing area for a few hours. Mistake. He ran around from hen to hen. I caught up with him quickly and put him back into the breeding area. Is it possible he has just been waiting all this time? These silkies are going to slip into broody land any day and I don't think I have fertilized eggs for them! I really don't want mixes.
Is there anything I can do to help this trio succeed? Roses? Music? Rooster Booster?
