what do you do with a dead chicken

Smom, I'm sorry. That was SO out of place. Please accept my apology. I don't know what or if I was thinking about the seriousness of the subject matter at the moment.

Our pet hen ended up getting two burials and funerals. After it died I just had Poppa come get it so daughter didn't have to deal with it and we went to his house and buried it in the pet cemetary. 2 hours later dear little daughter decided she wanted it buried under our apple tree.

So Poppa dug it up and now it rested at our house. Just thought it may get a giggle. I laugh now but I'm telling you losing that hen was a real tragedy.

I bury all dead animals at the drip line of any number of trees I want fertilized. It's comforting to know the animal is still making a contribution somehow, that in a way it continues to live by nourishing the tree. My favorite departed chickens are buried under my favorite trees. For example, my best broody is now helping my peach tree to grow. I think of her when I see that tree & eat its fruit.

I use a post hole digger to make a nice deep hole. For a larger animal or bird I'll dig 2-3 holes all together. If I think some living critter will try to dig it up, I'll put a block or paver on top of the refilled hole.

that is a wonderful idea.. beautiful in its own way..

oh and Joe, I have read other posts of yours and so I chalked it up to just that. Hence my reply not being mean either.

I had a hen freeze to death because she got shut out in the freezing rain all night(I must have counted wrong). I was just going to throw her in the trash and had laid her near the compost bin. A very friendly stray dog came by (we think he was dumped and thought about keeping him if he stuck around) . He had sniffed around the chickens and ignored them, just looked at the cats and didn't try to chase them, Then he found the dead hen before I realized it and took it and left (maybe afraid I would take it from him). I was just so sorry for the poor skinny thing that I thought "at least he will have a good meal" That was a week ago and I haven't seen him since.
Does that sound terrible?

I give all my deceased pets a proper funeral. I have a pet grave yard where I bury them all (but my duck Will was buried under my bedwindow, he was special)

We have only had dead chicks but we burn them. We burn our paper trash all the time so they burn up well. I don't care for other animals digging them up un less you can dig deep.

We bury them 3 ft deep when the ground isn't frozen. I think if we lose one this winter we'd have to wrap her up really well in garbage bags and let the trash man take her away. I wouldn't throw a bird in the woods - I feel like it invites the spread of disease.

We lost a dog in the winter and we had him cremated at the SPCA. I just didn't have the heart to put my little friend of 17 years in the trash can.
