Hatcheries require minimum purchases (usually 25 chicks). City folks are usually limited to 4 or 6 pullets, by city or HOA regulations.
For many city folks, about the only option for getting baby chicks is picking a few chicks out of the bin at Tractor Supply or a local feed store.
One can always order from MyPetChicken, who take small orders but charge a huge fee for shipping those small amounts. Both times I ordered chicks I have ordered from there and have been completely satisfied with the quality, the gender, the shipping method, etc. Well worth the money spent and turned out to be fantastic chickens!
City folks who cannot kill or rehome a roo might want to either study on how to sex your own chicks before making selections or buy laying pullets...which seems the easiest choice to me.
