This was a fantastic question! Thanks to the OP who posted. Great answers too. I myself have been wondering what we'll do. We can only have 6 chickens, so keeping 6 that don't lay consistently doesn't make sense to me or my family. Chickens are pets, but I can't imagine loving a chicken the way I love my dog. My dog (of 18 years) is family. I feel like chickens are pets with benefits. Once the benefits (eggs) start to fade...their value to us may go down as well. We bought chickens for the benefits and as a bonus, they are cute, funny and amusing.
So it sounds like cycling would be a good idea for me; I can't imagine culling, knowing that Clementine is in the soup tonight! Nothing wrong with it, I just don't think I could do it. I guess once the chickens are 1.5 years old I will need to start thinking of baby chicks. Maybe keep the 3 best layers and sell the other 3...getting 3 new babies a year... fun for the kids and optimal laying for the family.
Like someone said, plans on paper are different than what your situation will actually call for, but I like to have some kind of roadmap.
Great post! Thanks!
