I process mine to eat, most of the time. And whether the OP means to ask about excess roosters or roosters you mean to raise up for food, either way, that's how it goes.

But if the rooster does have very desirable traits I'd love to see pass on but have no room or time for, I sell him. I usually sell the better looking Araucana cockerels, good looking Olive Egger cockerels at times, and Polish cockerels at times. Last time I sold a rumpless Olive Egger several months ago and just got to see him a couple days ago at his new place. WOW has he grown to be an amazing huge chunk of handsome, and his offspring are also very beautiful. I'm so glad to see he's gone to a home that loves him and uses him.

But, most of the time, I eat my extra boys. Much more humane and tastier than getting stuff from the store.

I'm surprised that the results of your poll show that nearly 70% eat them. According to a poll Nifty did a while back, less than 10% of the forum members raise chickens for meat.

Is that Nifty poll available? I suspect it's more along the lines of "less than 10% of the forum members raise chickens solely for meat", and "dual-purpose" was also an option.

Great, now I'm totally curious!

May I ask what rescue you places your roos. We've had amazing success in not getting roosters, but this year, 75% were roosterd, and I can't have them. I live in the Seattle area.
Thanks

This is a really old thread. I just noticed I was asked for the poll I mentioned, so here it is. It’s only a year and a half late.

This poll started 5 years ago and is multi-selection. You can choose more than one reason for having chickens. That’s clearly stated up front. The first year or so “Raising them for Meat” stayed around 7% to 8% but now it is up to 27%. That’s quite a change. Over 3000 people have responded so it should be fairly valid.
