What do you do with your egg shells ?

Can the egg shell be giving back to my coturnix quail after they have been dried up and smashed ?

I do it, it is almost like oyster shells!!

My take on this, and first, I want to clarify that it comes from back when I kept chickens.

I "never" EVER gave egg shells to my chickens. I didn't want them to consume ANYTHING that remotely looked or tasted like egg. If I had fed egg shell, it would only have been after baking them (to kill any bacteria & maybe alter the taste) and crushing them so fine they would be unrecognizable. I never wanted to encourage any possibility of egg eating.

Since one reason I have my quail is for the eggs they produce, I have taken the same approach. I haven't seen tales of quail eating eggs like I do chickens, but I've been unwilling to risk it. So, I buy a 5 pound bag of oyster shell at TSC and it lasts for eons since they don't need much of it.

Then, I chunk the egg shells into the compost, along with the bird & rabbit bedding and any veggie or food scraps I can't "recycle" by feeding to some animal or another.

I normally don't but have feed them back. I agree with the above post about cooking them & crushing them. As for quail being egg eaters they love them once they get started. I use a roll away cage now. They could still get to them but the eggs roll under there food trays so I guess they just eat what ever is easier.

I boil the eggs then feed the whole thing ( shells ) and all to the buttons. I also feed what ever else I have left over to my pet my chickens in the frontyard.

Many Folks Do Feed Them Back, But I Am With Rozzie And King On This... I Dont Even Want My Birds Looking At Eggs... Once They Start That Egg Eater Crap The Trick Is Learned By All Others Within Sight And Quick Too!...before You Know It They Will All Eat Any And Every Single Egg They Can Get Ahold Of. And The Penalty For Egg Destruction Here Is Immediate And Horribly Traumatic Death---1st Offense No Mercy, Killed On Sight. If You Do Feed The Shells Back They Would Need To Be Processed In Such A Way That They Can In No Way Be Associated With The Eggs They Produce.

I feed crushed oyster shell to my quail and ducks. Their egg shells go to the garden.
