what do you grow/raise on your property?

joanm, put some chickens to work on that plot right now. They will clear it of grass and fertilize it at the same time.

That's great advice! I'm currently prepping a small plot for a garden now. My dad's helping me lay some bricks for the planters(raised) and walkways and we are mixing the soil with commercial organic compost. There's no weeds, but I'm sure the chicken poo will help!

I'm planning on planting tomatoes, bell peppers, a wonderful Japanese squash, snap peas...I'm not sure how much my little garden will be able to accommodate actually!

I'm also on the verge of breaking down and getting a pet tortoise(I've always wanted one!) that can help compost the garden, consume the produce and help breakdown the plants in the winter...any tortoise keepers out there with some advice?

BTW, lindseykoehler...garlic sounds interesting to grow, I never thought about that!! I LOVE garlic!!

I have a Sulcata tortoise. They can get over 150 lbs. and eat mostly grass though produce should be given only as a treat on occaision. ANd no fruit. It upsets there intestonal flora.

I now have the young pullets, I have a vegetable garden that seems to change every year I have a winter garden going now with brussels sprouts and beets, spinach, parsnips, carrots, shallots. I need to get the Garlic planted!!! I am a couple weeks late.
I have five fruit trees and strawberries, raspberries and blueberries.

I want to plant blackberries or raspberries in the spring. Which would be easier? I'm thinking blackberries?

I am the "flower lady" of the block...I have tons of peonies, especially. I order from a favorite peony nursery in Canada called Pivoinerie D'Aoust. It's the BEST. The highlight of my past few springs has been waiting to see how my new plants look in person when they bloom. It's a splurge that somehow I've justified, and my husband has been nice enough to agree with.

Interestingly, I've noticed that I tend to plant things so we look good from the road. I have this fantasy that people drive by and say, "OH MY GOODNESS...look what she's done...what a CLEVER TALENTED woman..why didn't WE think of that?!!!!"

Horrible, I know.

And I'm horrible at pulling out freebie seedlings. A major part of my gardening is self-seeded plants. I swore I would "show no mercy" this year so my regular plants stood a better chance....didn't happen.

Oh, and a big thing this year was kale. We planted Redbore and Niro de Toscana. Both are beautiful and tastey.
