What do you grow to feed the chickens??

Quote: Have you ever had fried green tomatoes? I tried them this year and they are so gooooood!

Hopefully we will get some good amounts of rain soon.

I all the seeds I planted for the birds never did come up. I'm not sure why I did water them every couple of days.
I was talking to DH about trying to plant some greens of some kind for the birds in the back of their runs about the same time we will be planting winter grass for the cows. We will see.

A friend of mine prefers to plant oats for is cows, vs. rye. I do not remember the logic behind the preference, but he would get good stands.

I'm willing to try green tomatos now that I have been been introduced to tomatillos.

Sorry those seeds didnt germinate. ALl that work to seed them and water them. IDK.

Arielle we do the fried green tomatoes the same way as the okra. Dip it in milk and egg wash, then mix equal parts of corn meal and flour cover completely. In a skillet cover the bottom with oil and place the tomatoes flat and fry till golden on the bottom then flip on the other side when you take them out salt lightly.

Would kale do well being planted while its hot and maturing when it starts to cool? It's 3 months til November. It MIGHT start to cool in October, if we're lucky. I do have some kale seeds. Would it survive the winter here, do you think? It gets quite cold at night sometimes and we get strong wind often.

Do you wait until the tomatoes are just starting to turn color or can you do them whenever they look big enough? I have two huge plants that have lots, lots of two - three inch green tomatoes. Only two have gone full term and they were about 4 inches before they started to ripen. Always wanted to try fried green tomatoes, now I have a recipe. thanks.

Thank you, I am going to try a plot mix on one pasture and winter rye but I will talk to DH about planting some oats. Our cows are beef cows I don't really know what the difference is my husband has had cows his whole life.
It was not a suggestion. Just an observation I made. Something I picked up on. These were beef cattle to.
