What do you have in your flock?

Pics
update: Possum caught in a catch and release trap last night. He was taken far far away. As long as we have chickens we will have a live trap set up.

We have
1 Rhode Island Red (Ruby)
1 Buff Orpington (Sierra)
2 Barred Rock (Columbine and Nevada)
1 Silver Spangled Hamburg (Jumper)
1 Silver Laced Wyandotte (Streak)
1 Americauna pullet (Nova)

Sad that we just lost a second Americauna pullet to a friend's dog that we are dog sitting.

How is the temperament of your lovely Hamburg? I get such different feedback on these guys. Anywhere from overly active and roosting in trees rather than coops, to a golden Hamburg that turned out someone's favorite good natured calm hen in the flock. What's your honest input about your silver Hamburg?

I would say she is definitely one of the feistier ones in our flock. She is the smallest by far and gets picked on a little bit by the other birds, but she also can fly the highest - she's escaped into our neighbor's yard. (We are in a suburban area with 6ft fencing.)

She also is a little bit independent-minded and is determined to find her own place to next - we have found her little white eggs *inside* the feeder, as well as in the bale of wood chips that were stored away, as well as in the bushes.

She doesn't mind being handled and is pretty sweet but I would agree that she's not as docile or easy to handle. Our sweetest / easiest are the buff orpington and the RIR.

Oops I just lost my reply. The Hamburg is very independent minded and can fly over fence etc. She is determined to next and lay outside of the coop and we find white eggs all around the yard, under bushes, in the bale of wood chips (which was secured), etc. Definitely not as docile a chicken. But she is easy to handle and sweet in her own way.

Pic of mine when they were wee little lasses.
I would agree that the Hamburgs can be escape artists and all. I adore my little ones. (LOL little as in small they are over 3 years old)
When I first built the new coop they kept trying to roost in the run. Did some measuring and found the roost in the run was 2 " higher than the one in the coop. I did not know they had the ability to figure that out. I lowered that roost and TADA no more run sleeping.

They do fly well though. Mine easily cleared the 6' run one day with no take off room either. AMAZING little birds.

Believe it or not I received your other lost reply in my email! Funny how that happened!

Thx for an honest assessment of your Hamburg. We all luv our chix & hard to admit no one is ever 100% perfect. Your assessment has been pretty consistent with other owner feedback. TY!
