It's nothing super fancy or anything, but I've been making cold process egg soap for almost a year now. I've been dabbling with more interesting designs in my recent batches and I have a couple ideas for some neat stuff I plan to do eventually, too.

Some friends of mine jokingly called this batch of vanilla-scented soap 'forbidden fudge' and it kinda stuck. I promise it's soap, not chocolate!

I don't really do the top designs anymore because of soda ash, but I do really like how some of them turned out before they got ashy. I wish I'd taken pictures of this one once it had hardened and was out of the mold, but apparently I didn't.

Anyway, it's mostly just a fun hobby, at least for now. I have more soap at this point than I think I'll use in an entire lifetime, but I just love making it and seeing how it turns out, and there's something so satisfying to me about being able to create something visually interesting or beautiful that's also useful in daily life.

Love it! Egg soap?!? How didn't I know that was a thing! I love handmade soap and that's usually what I use. Sometimes my daughter and I make soaps too but I'm definitely not a pro! I like using molds to make mine cute because I don't have the color swirl skills. Lol

Yup! As soon as I found out I could use up some eggs in soap, I had to try it! Of course, I only use like 2-4 eggs per batch of soap, so it's not much when you consider that I'm getting between one and two dozen a day at the moment, but hey, it's using some of them at least!

That was actually my first color swirl, that first picture! And it didn't swirl as much as I wanted because I over-mixed my batter and it went to trace too fast, but I think it turned out pretty well anyway.

This is where I started with reading up on it: https://classicbells.com/soap/eggSoap.asp I do think that they're a little bit conservative with the amount of eggs per pound oils / fats on that page, but there really is a lot of leeway in the number of eggs you can use, and the important part is to take into account the amount of the weight of the egg is water so that you can cut that out of your water for your regular recipe, and to be aware of temperatures so you don't end up with cooked egg in your soap!

I also recently came across this video where this soapmaker adds the eggs (mixed with a tiny bit of the oils) to the batter after mixing the lye water and the rest of the oils / fats to emulsification, which I thought was kind of interesting. I've always blended the eggs into my oils before adding the (cooled to ~105° F or slightly lower) lye and water and have never had any separation or rejection like she talks about in the video, but the bubbles she got from how she mixed hers were pretty amazing! (She actually gets to the egg soap at around 3:10 in the video if you want to skip her initial, unrelated ramblings )

I love supporting small businesses and crafters and there's no better time to do this than when fulfilling a Christmas list! I try to do this every year because I have many friends that support their families by making handcrafted items and I was thinking that there are probably many people that I chat with all the time here at BYC and I don't realize that they too offer handmade items that would make great gifts! So, I’m curious, what do you make? I manufacture fishing lures for bass, northern pike, and musky.
