Probably overkill but I put down puppy pee pads (grt for under the waterer) , sprinkled DE and topped it off with rice straw-- just used what was availible and this worked great.. Sand seems intriguing but I liked the straw for the burrowing component espec when I was weaning them off heat....
Brand new chicks get puppy pee pads on bottom, then a layer of pine shavings, theh a layer of paper towels on top (just till they learn that pine shavings are not food)!
Older chicks get newspaper on bottom, and pine shavings on top. Although lately, I've found this crinkled purple paper bedding at petsmart that is dust-free, keeps down odors and dampness much better than pine, and the chicks really have fun scratching and flinging it. Plus it's easier to pick out of a half-full chick feeder than pine is. And there's no way a chick could mistake it for food.
