What do you put in your nesting boxes?

I use shavings, thanks to ONE hen who used to stuff herself with alfalfa to the point of impaction. ONE!

I've been using shredded paper from my office shredder. Seems okay so far...

I use shavings. The way my nest boxes are they can't kick the shavings out anywhere. So far it has worked nicely for me.

If you don't feel comfortable buying hay or straw in a bale, you can go to a pets r us or pet smart and get a bag of timothy hay. I thought i'd be real clever doing that until it cost me 15.00 for 98 oz.! Ouch. Then i went to a baled hay field and raked up the very fine grass left behind. The girls just purrred.

I have been using dried grass clippings from my yard. I have had no problems. The yard gets brush-hogged so it is long and when it dries I put in a pile and the chickens make it into a nest.

I used shavings and straw and the girls prefered straw. They tuck the straw in around them and make a nice neat round nest. They cant do that with the shaving.
