I put laying and other. Mine are ex-batts so I don't really expect too much of them - from their point of view it was me or the slaughter house - I am sure they are happier with me. I feed them layers pellets, am sprouting hemp, mung bean, radish, alfa, they also get split yellow peas, oats etc, and occasionally some dried currants, raisins etc Every time I go out to see them they come running - are treat obsessed. I usually get two eggs a day from 4 hens - but yesterday I got three which was a great bonus.

We are vegetarian so they will live out their natural lives - and for them every day is a bonus anyway - and I am doing my best to make those days happy.

I have 5 chickens and got them for laying eggs. They will be turning 2 this June, when they decide to stop laying eggs that will be fine too--I will be happy just having them as pets.

I love my eggs, even after five years seeing all the pretty colors in the boxes still makes me happy...I give dozens (and dozens) to family and friends, but I really love chicken energy:....gives my place a homey atmosphere. :love Hatching and watching them grow is a treat, and their attitudes crack me up. My seven year old grandgirl knows more about chickens than most of the adults she meets, it's fun to hear her lecture to them.

Plus I don't have to haul manure for my garden from a duck farm, which is usually full of dead duck parts, or from the horse farm, which is loaded with weed seed. I know what's going into my veggie patch.

I keep my Japanese Bantams for the following reason -

1. they are pets and look cute!
2. eggs taste lovely
3. sell good quality chicks (helps with food costs)
4. interest in breeding new colours

Laying + pets. My husband was begging for pets and chickens will at least a little bit "earn their keep."

Got them for laying, but honestly I was just curious what it would be like to own chickens. Now that I have them I keep them because they are funny and a great addition to our home.

I selected "other," because our tiny flock are pets & loved family members to us, more than anything else. But naturally we also love that they gift us with nutritious, delicious eggs!

Other.........being as pets. If the economy keeps going downhill I may have to change my answer to meat and laying, but for now it is the simple pleasure of having them around. My husband and I enjoy having them around and watching their antics. The eggs are a wonderful extra and have ruined us on store bought eggs forever. If our recent addition turns out to be a roo then we will have the added pleasure of watching chicks being raised by their moma which I remember fondly from my childhood.
