What do you think about 6 egg auctions? Usless?

This is only my opinion but I don't waste my time on 6 egg auctions. I think they are a waste of time and money because here is my track record. Six eggs cost the same amount of money to ship as the 12 egg auctions. So you get your 6 eggs and spend more in shipping than the eggs cost, maybe a few more 'if the hens cooperate'. Then the average hatch rate for shipped eggs is 50% so you get 3 to hatch and what do you bet you get at least 2 roos and maybe even 3. Anybody out there have that kind of experience?

Your Right But if its a breed thats rare of hard to find you and you need them, and all they offer is 6 eggs, you need them. You can still build up your flock even with and original 4-6 birds (on a good hatch)

My buyers always have good hatch rates and I have no problem selling 6+ egg auctions.

Not knocking fertility since shipped eggs have a lot to do with the Post office handling. You take your chances. Just saying I don't take those chances anymore because of my experiences and wondered if anyone else has had the same. I guess with 2 roos and a hen you definately wont have a problem with fertility! And roosters are pretty so you can sit back with a beer and admire them.

Ya know, I can see people trying to get some rare breeds that are really expensive and they couldn't afford 12 eggs so they try for the 6. I'm all for that but 6 barred rocks! Come on! It's cheaper to buy the chicks at the feed store. Well I guess they could be champion show stock but then the big question is, do they still lay eggs? or are they just pretty? You can put them out there with the pretty roosters from the last hatch. Sorry, just having some fun. Hope I don't offend anyone.

All I was wondering is if anyone has had the same luck as me on the 6 egg auctions

Im not sure if Ive ever bought a 6 egg auctions. I usually pass them on by; if Im going to incubate shipped eggs, I want a dozen or more.

Now this one right here I would gladly buy 6 eggs from. It just depends on the breed, the reputation of the line and what someone is willing to pay for. P&P up there has some really beautiful birds.

Not only that, she is a fountain of information.

I have been looking for Polish eggs that will actually make it here in one piece and then hatch, it isn't even funny. If the right ones came up and it was only 6, I would gladly buy them.​

I won a 6 egg auction, and the seller sent 11. I'm very grateful for the extras as it looks like only 3 will hatch. Indiana to New Mexico must be a ROUGH trip!

If you're using a bantam broody hen, she can't sit on too many eggs, and a 6 egg auction is perfect, especially if they're standard eggs. My little broody covered 11 bantam eggs perfectly, but I wouldn't have wanted to risk too many more under her. If I had an incubator, I'd definitely want to go for the bigger auctions, though. I'd feel guilty if I ran it only partly full!

I've bought most of my eggs recently as 6-egg auctions or orders & hatched them in a Brinsea Mini. I've had every one of the eggs develop and usually they have all hatched. It may not be worth the time & money to some people on lots of acreage in the country who can have hundreds of chickens, no problem, but for someone who wants a specific, hard-to-find breed or a few color of each breed, ior for someone who really does have backyard chickens due to urban lot size, it's a fine way to go. I've never personally had a 50% hatch rate on shipped eggs, even in the winter, unless they've arrived broken.
I usually have 80-90%, but I've been lucky I guess.
