This is a pic of my one little egg that didnt hatch. There was an air cell at lockdown, but when i was suspicious that something was wrong I candled again and there was no air cell anymore. After doing a water test this morning i decided it was most likely gone, But i thought best to crack it open, as this was my first hatch and i wanted to be sure.

The membrane came away easily and was nice and moist, the chick is fully grown, and just perfect. I did notice it looked like blood pooled in the inner membrane, but when i opened it, it didnt look as much. although i did notice some blood and a clot near the chicks mouth. So my guess is that its pipped into a vein. But i did also notice that its head seemed well tucked under its wing, so unless it couldnt move. It didnt get through the shell at all, andi didnt think it had gone through the inner membrane but it must have enough for the air cell to go.

Here is the pics, i would love anyone elses opinions.

For all im sad this one didnt hatch, i am kinda happy that it was fully grown and it seems to have been a hatching issue rather than a growing one

there didnt even seem to be that much blood! They really cant take too much can they, but then again looking at the clot, you dont know how much it may have swallowed as well.

Not entirely sure what could have happened. probably something to do with piping through a vien like you said though.

But Just thought I'd point out that the chicks are supposed to have their head under their wing. That is the normal hatching position.

Thats good, that rules out that then. So back to the pipped in the vein theory.

It was kinda cool to see one as it would have been in the shell, The kids have had a right education, not only did they see one hatch, they got to see one as it would have been in the shell. Of course i would have rather had a live chick, but we nearly got there.

I think perhaps if it piped through a vein it might have ingested or inhaled the blood into it's lungs - asperated (sp?) it? Or the blood made it to sticky for the chick to externaly pip? I am sorry for your loss
