I have the same issue with puppies as I do with young birds. It's so darned hard to tell what's in there. There are so many larger, longer haired breeds of dogs! Once you mash a bunch of them together, combined with the squishiness of a puppy, it can be hard. I bet as they grow, you would start to see some more characteristics of the breeds they my be mixed with.
No matter the mix, I'd say if you were looking for an outside farm dog, one of these guys would probably work quite well. They are also young enough that you could begin your training immediately.
Here, BMDs are an extremely common breed. We see them in the hospital all the time. We also get quite a few BMD mixes (The "Oops my poor quality BMD which I refused to have fixed despite an overwhelming number of low cost clinics around here got loose and came home pregnant" kind of thing) A lot of these pups look pretty similar to the ones you posted above, which is why I'm inclined to agree with the vet. I do think just about everything is said to have "shepherd" in it though!
