! I have not studied the serama standard extensively, just enough to be able to gauge where my birds are at.Thank You so much!! Do you think he’ll be ok for my breeding program? He’s somewhere around 20 weeks old so - still a way to go..Thanks for the tag, Tink! I have not studied the serama standard extensively, just enough to be able to gauge where my birds are at.
I’ll do my best.
@allosaurusrock is the true serama expert!
How old is he? I’m assuming he’s rather young. Are these pictures indicative of how far he is willing to pose?
I love his chest; seems nice and broad. With proper posing it should pop out more.
He carries his wings nicely. The proper wing carriage is completely horizontally, but that is incredibly hard to achieve in most lines. He seems to possess what is needed.
His tail feathers seem nice and spread out. Male serama tails should look like an upside down V when looked at from behind; I think he’s got that too.
His comb tips look nice, although his comb could be larger (which can be just an age thing).
His head looks ok. It might just be the light hitting his face making it look a little weak.
Feather quality is good.
Depending on his age, different things apply. His comb for example is normal if he’s less than a year old or so. For over a year old, a nice comb and larger sickle feathers would be nice
deflateI must admit they’re not the best photos of him as he was just starting to “deflate” out of his pose- aka I was late getting my phone!!![]()
that really fits and it totally cracked me up.

greatly appreciated @fluffycrow
.Well thanks for this , you see I’ve only ever bred old English buff Orpington’s- lovely!! And quail so I thought I’d change it up a bit for the 2026 season and try some seramas- originally o wanted sebrights but it was one or the other!! So it’s mainly a trial, if I enjoy them- which I very much do. Il consider scaling up like I did with the buffsAha, I was not far off! I was guessing 5 and a half months old.
Definitely ignore comments about the comb and the head then; he should fill out some more over the winter.
Well, here’s the thing. I’d say yes. But I don’t know your exact goals, nor what the girls look like. Remember that any “faults” would be amplified in some of the offspring if the pullets have them as well.
He’s a promising guy though.
Yup, totally get that. Happens to all of us. The best poses are taken right as you’re reaching into your pocket to take out your phone, and are lost the second you open your camera.
He’s got a long way to go before maturity, so his body will change a bit, but so far, so good!
HAHA Legs of steel I can tell you. LOL and if I can’t my arm scratches certainly can!!!!Oh, his head looks great there! A lot of show lines have very sickly skulls, his looks great!
He’s got good legs as well. An expert might find some sort of fault, but I love them!
Serama should not have tiny legs; they are not Japanese bantams! Their legs should be medium in size, and able to carry them properly!
