What do you think of these breeds for a newbie?

How about getting 2 of each so you can include both Buff Orpingtons and Barred Rocks? I have 2 BO, 2 BR, 2 EE and 3 Australorps (from your list) and some other breeds, too. The friendliest (of those on your list) is one of the EE and the most skittish is the other EE. My BOs will bite my hand off if I try to get eggs out from under them (even when they aren't broody). I agree with Davaroo that each strain of a breed may have different temperments.
You can get chicks from different sources and integrate them at some point. In my grow out pen I have a pair of Lav Orpingtons (10/09), 5 mixed chicks (12/4/09), 11 mixed chicks (12/28/09) and one Barred Holland (5/09). The youngest chicks have a place to hide. The next youngest have been with the lav pair for 3 weeks already. The rest were put in the grow out pen 3 days ago. The Barred Holland can't go in with my adults since she was a single chicken just out of quarantine.

The breed that is the most friendly at the moment in my coop is New Hampshire Red. Great layers and great in cold weather.

Handle them often.
