Hi Melanie, I'm just getting into Cochins this year (actually last Fall/Winter). So I am pretty much a beginner on them, but I hear those are the top breeders to buy from. They look awesome to me. Mine are not SQ by any means. Nice looking but only project birds compared to yours. You got a great start! Way to go. I couldn't even guess which roo is better.

Yep, the Roebuck rooster is definitely a cull. Did you buy them straight from Tom himself or from someone else?
I don't like the looks of those feathers on the hen. Generally an ideal cochin feather is wide very wide and pliable but strong. It almost looks like the feather barbs aren't sticking together in some areas. Can't say for sure, but it looks like you may have purchased an espensive pair of culls, the rooster for sure.

I would stick with your other rooster. He has a nice cochin-y head and a good, round body and nice leg feathering. How do his toes look? Sometimes cochins and other feather legged breeds can have a problem with the outer toes in that they are stumpy or completely lacking a toenail or joint. Birds with this genetic defect also should not be bred as it can get to the point where the outer toe is too short or deformed. I've bred a couple of birds with this problem and they are being sold as culls at our local swap for $5. No cull bird should be bought for more than a few dollars.

How does that black cochin of yours look?

Melanie,
Hi. the male bird that you are saying is from Tom Roebuck is in fact NOT my bird. The other male that you identify as being from John is my bird. Note the frost bit tips on the comb that you asked me about at the show. I would know my birds anywhere and I guarantee that male has a yellow wing band on his right wing with my NPIP number on it. So I guess what I am saying is to please make sure that if you are going to identify the source of your birds, that you get the identity correct. I told you when we talked on the phone that I have no problem putting good birds in the silent auctions to help out clubs make some money and to hopefully get some newcomers like yourself get a good start, and that male is exactly that, a good bird.

Tom
