Is picket fence okay for small ponys/minis?
I am building a 50ft by 100ft dry lot for my two minis who cannot have grass and since it will be in my backyard I want something that will look nice and be safe đź©·when looking online I found a picture of this paddock that was featured in stable style and it looks very similar to what I am wanting to do

Is there any downside to picket fence other than the typical maintenance of a wooden fence?
We will be building it ourselves so the gaps will be too small for a mini hoof to get stuck

Should be a good size area, but a picket fence won't be the best. They will probably rub on it and I would do something more sturdy! Building a normal fence will probably work out better. Usually minis get some chicken wire or something around the fences to stop them from escaping. Make sure you get good wire!

Nope, Nope, NOPE! It's cute, but that fence is an accident just WAITING to happen!
  • Horse fences need a solid top bar! All it takes is one bad spook and you have a mini impaled on those pickets. That's not an injury any equine is likely to survive!
  • Vertical slats are also an issue for tiny feet - or full-sized ones, for that matter. The reason most horse fencing has horizontal crossbars is to minimize caught (and broken) legs!
  • Boards need to be mounted on the inside to keep grazers from pushing them out to get to "greener" grass on the other side of the fence.
