What do you think of un-schooling??

honestly I think those parents should be arrested. Their children are not being prepared to function in society. By the time these kids realize that they really do need to learn grammar and math, it will be too late.

Thing is, we know a huge family that was able to get away from a certain situation, which will remain unnamed, but anyways, all the older ones, went through all 12 grades in about 2 years time. It is never to late to learn.

That said though, most unschoolers, are not ignorant and chaotic. The ones I am familiar with, use things like planning the garden, the daily budget, shopping, cooking, etc., to do math and reading and writing.
They actually far exceed the standards that are set for their ages.
Mainly in part, because they are doing at the same time they are learning.
Some certainly do use it as an excuse to not actually educate though.

I know for myself, I learn better when it has nothing to do with a textbook. I need to use my hands and eyes in a project, for anything to be properly retained.
We ask children today, to sit still and learn from textbooks for very long hours. And we are puzzled why boys do not learn in that kind of structure?

I agree. Too many abuse that system of home education. There are SOME who do a great job.

I don't know why everyone rushes to praise public school as if it's the only viable option. There are a lot of great things about it but the one flaw that can't ever be fixed is that it can't be catered to multiple types of learning or outside the box thinking. More and more schools are forced to teach according to standardized testing and not what really counts. I think for the prepared, educated parent who has done his/her research, unschooling could be the best thing to happen to a kid.
